Yes
It is my understanding that the 5d mki was realeased around the same time as the 20d. So i assume that the 5d would have a much superior iso handling and AF in low light conditions.

But with the 40d being two incarnations later in the xxd family, how far did technology advance?
How does the 40d compare to the 5d in low light?

5D wins hands down on ISO performance without a doubt. However, the 5D's AF is pants.

I've tested both my 5D MKI's against a Canon 50D and the 5D wins hands down.

Considering the 50D is a newer version of the 40D aswell. Definately wins on high ISO's

I've got a 40D just now - had a original 5D some time ago. Pixel density on the 5D's larger sensor is much lower so tends to fair better.

That said I always reckon the 40D fairs better than the 50D for noise - again less MP albeit on the same sized sensor.

Cool. The iso performance on the 40d has always been good enough for what i do, so if the 5d is as good or better then that is great.

So it seems it is just the AF that may be an issue.
EDIT: Though i should mention, i will have a flash attached so i will have the aid of the af assist beam.

Although small sensor technology is rapidly catching up on the old 5DMkI (newer full frame is of course advancing as well) there's still no denying the physical advantages of the larger sensor. Although I have used neither camera I'd be surprised if the 5D didn't win hands down on noise at high ISO. Whether that is of paramount importance to you, only you can decide. :)

I guess the lens it's used with will have an effect too on the focusing.

The 40d is being used with a tokina 11-16 f2.8, where ad the 5d would be paired with a canon 17-40 f4 L.

look here you can see all three side by side
AS you will see the 5d was in 2005 and the 40D was in 2007 and the 20D was in 2004

I had a 40D and I was worried it would handle ISO better than the 5D's, but the 5D really impressed me. Its still a cracking camera, I wish I kept one for holidays and oddball stuff.

I think 5d is better in low light thanks to bigger sensor... only hardware and software of 7d can do something similar to 5d old...but only similar!
