40D vs. 400D (focusing)

I've revisited Woburn Safari a few days ago because I had a re-entry ticket.

Brought my 400D with 24-105L as the 40D went for cleaning.

I've just noticed how slow the 400D focuses compared to my 40D.

I think for that reason alone the 40D is well worth the extra £.

Yes, I thought it focuses really fast when I first got it, but the 40D is really quick.

there maybe an increase in focusing speed. for those of us that dont have the 40D will probably still thing the 400D is quick. like me

Have to agree with Strobemonkey on this one. I have the 40d as a main body and a 400d as the second one and the 40d is sooo much quicker at focusing.

well you live and learn, i think i will stick with my slow 400D it suits my lifestyle, nothing ever happens very quickly for me

The 40D's decision is approximately 30% faster than the 400D. This is only part of the equation though and the body sends the commanded move to the lens in digital format. The speed of the lens focus motor then becomes the restriction.

The accuracy of the original decision then comes into play and it's likely that the 40D has a better first time hit rate than the 400D (especially in difficult conditions) and this will also have a benefit on the "time to achieve focus"

In short, a lens with a fast AF motor will make the bodies portion of focussing time more relevent than a lens with a slow AF motor providing that the body gets it right first time.
