I am upgrading from a Panasonic DCM TZ3 (compact) which has served me well as a newbie to a 40DKit
The lens included in the kit is 17-85mm IS
Im into landscape shots & Im wondering if this is the right lens for seaside, lakes, sunsets etc. :thinking:
Should I go ahead with the kit (as I am a learner & consider another lens when I get used to the camera) or buy the body only with an alternative lens?
What filters would you recommend with the 40D.

I have the 17-85 lens on my 20D. It's a good lens, there are better and there are a lot worse. Does tend to suffer from barrel distortion wide open, curved horizons can be a bit off putting, bit it's not too bad. The IS does help in low light conditions and does make up for it being an F4.

The alternative could be the 17-40L Lot more expensive. Better lens, and compatible with full frame cameras if you ever get one.

Having said that the 17-85 is still on my 20D and supplements my other cameras very well. I'm not sure at the price if you could get a better lens with IS and that zoom range.

Filters, just get a UV to protect the front element ( not a cheap one please) and a polariser. Most other things you can do in PP.

the 17-85 is a pretty good lens for the money. i like mine and gives a good versatile walkabout lens, and would do good till you get used to the camera and from then can figure out where you need to look for a new lens, if you have a budget for the replacement lens with the body only, people will be able to advise you better

Thanks fletch5. As replied to Chappers the lens is at a good price as part of the kit, will probably go for it & explore other lenses when I get used to the camera. Regards, Misty :thumbs:
