40D to GF1? Update.....

I made the leap from a 50D and L glass to a GF1/G1 and a selection of lenses from the 7-14 to the 100-300. Never looked back, very happy and take my kit everywhere now without the broken back. One with 50D and 100-400L, the other with G1 and 100-300. The last pic is just to emphasise the size difference.

Wow, either of those pictures would do for me tbh although I'm guessing the top one is with the 50D?

Cheers for the comparison shot too, kind of puts it into perspective in a big way!

Some of your pictures are amazing! I have just come back from a snowboarding trip and managed to injure myself on the first day!! I was kicking myself that I didn't take my camera because it was too much hassle.

Next year I'll be taking the GF1,,

Cheers! I've just got back from a snowboarding trip and the GF1 was perfect for me.

Right, the top one is 50D but in much better light conditions than the second which was taken today in overcast weather.

I have considered the NEX-5 but from what I've read, it handles a lot less like a DSLR than the GF1 requiring you to enter menus to change aperture etc...

The new firmware has changed all that! You can assign the softkeys to do actions like ISO, WB etc. Life is SO much easier. Sadly the kit lenses are not great, they are good but not up to Panny 20mm f/1.7 quality. When using quality manual focus lenses the NEX 5 really does shine and is as good and most DSLR's from what i have seen. I have just bought a Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2.4 MF lens and can't wait to get a chance to use it. From what i have seen on the net it should be awesome! Sony are bringing out more lenses this year as the NEX is outselling all other cameras in it's class in Japan.

Not significantly smaller though and with lenses still a lot more bulky than a MFT system.

:agree:

It's the size as much as the weight to be honest.

I can probably con the wife into sticking the Gf1 into her handbag to save me carrying it at all! Doubt id manage that with a 500D even with a 50mm attached...

Quite.

A MFT will probably fit in a coat pocket and that's where my GF1+20mm goes but a DSLR? Not in any pocket on any coat I have.

Sorry to go off topic. I was in LCE today in colchester as they are stocking the full range of Lumix lenses to see how much the 20mm was, and the manager said the same was true ove here. I don't think it was a sales pitch as i had already told him i didn't like the feel of it.

I don't think that I'd like the handling of the Nex but cameras and photography just like other gadgets are moving on, not necessarily in the direction that some of us here would like them too.

I went from having a E-P1 with 14-42 and 20mm lens to a 50D with a sigma 10-20, sigma 30 1.4 and about to get a canon 70-200L F4 IS.

Long and short is, as wonderful as the camera and lens were, the stuff I really wanted - fast portrait lens, UWA was either too expensive or didn't exist. I also wanted shallower dof. My E-p1 didn't fit in my pocket and neither does my 50D either.

To my knowledge the lens are still expensive and there's no magical 40-50mm sub f2 portrait lens.

I enjoyed taking photos of jets at RIAT and Farnborough airshows this year, I think it would have been next to impossible with MFT gear to do the same for the fighters etc.

If I had the chance I'd like to pickup a small MFT body just for the 20mm 1.7. That lens is absolutely superb, and coupled with the 4 stops of IBIS, untouchable as a lowlight machine.

I'm also a bit wary of m43 going the way of 43.

But you'd like the handling of a GF-1?

Yes, don't you?

The only thing that's missing for me is an OVF, although I'd also like distance markings on the 20mm and a flash adjust button rather than having to dive into the menu system.

Other than those things I think it's perfectly fine.

Not really, but I was just wondering what you prefer about it over the NEX?

The Nex doesn't look like a traditonal camera to me and I think I prefer more buttons and dials than touch screens and menu options.

It's a personal choice and I can see how the Nex might appeal to some. The GF range seems to be going a similar way with the GF2.

I think I prefer the GF1.

Well, I have only gone and done it!!

Got ima
patient waiting for a second hand one so having spotted their offer on camerapricebuster, I popped into Wilkinson Cameras in Southport on the way home and picked up a lovely black GF1 with 20mm pancake lens.

I am now patiently waiting for the battery to charge!!

I will post a mini-review / update once I have had a play and taken some "post-worthy" pics!

Many thanks for all of the advice above. Yes, it did require the sacrifice of my 70-200 f4L but at least I still have the 40D and the 24-70 2.8L.
