Yes
Canon 40D to 7D is it worth the upgrade regardless of the video mode ?

I went from the 40D to 7D mainly for the better autofocus and it is significantly better.

I went the same route and the 7D is superior in every way as far as I am concerned. Warning though you'll need bigger cf cards lol

I made the same upgrade.

Without hesitation the answer is yes!!

Yep. I've just done the same. And don't forget the wireless flash controller.

Mike, don't mean to hi-jack the thread .... but i'm in exactly the same position... i currently have a 40D, and also a 50D ... 50D is off for repair, who knows how long for! Is the upgrade to the 7D still worth it from the 50D ? I'm finding the 50D a little limiting at the moment, but can't quite stretch to the 1 series stuff :(

and....

- build/weatherproofing;
- faster FPS;
- 100% viewfinder;
- +/-3 stop meter and EC/FEC;
- new colour aware 63 zone metering system;
- better ergonomics;
- while part of the improved AF system, I guess AF microadjustment should get its own mention;
- better battery life, with accurate usage/remaining data;

and that's of the top of my head.

EDIT :
- and a better featured Live View implementation;

The only thing the 50D has over the 40D mentioned is the MP.

I am hankering for a 7D over my 50D (will be a few months yet still!) for the improved AF - this alone makes it more worthwhile for me.

and AF microadjustement, and the superior screen and preview image quality, and if you care for it (which I don't), ALO and LPIC (which I don't think the 40D had, and need to be added to the 7D list as well). The 50D was also supposed to have improved sealing as well.

There's a bit more listed in this side by side comparison....

The battery life is one of the things I like most strangely, despite all the other technical improvements. I just seem to feel more content about the camera. Bizarre!

It is a difficult decision , I was wondering things like : is a lot of the cost for the video feature ? which to be honest im not fussed about but most new dslr`s now have this . I would of been happier if they had spent it on camera features .
The speed and better auto focus appeals to me and sounds like a big plus over the 40d just not so sure about some of the extra features for the expense .

Defo worth it! I made the same upgrade and it was worth every penny!! The AF is brilliant! :thumbs:

It's not hard to list the many, many advantages the 7D offers over the 40D and 50D, but the judgement regarding their value can only be made by the individual. I have absolutely no interest in video, but as an upgrade to my 50D I am quite satisfied that I made the right choice.

In my opinion it is better to look upon the 7D as a junior 1D (and in some respects it even surpasses the new 1D4) rather than a pumped up 50D. On that basis, priced as it is, I think the 7D offers very fair value, being only 1/3 the cost of the 1D4.

I actually downgraded from 5D mkII to 7D :D

I don't really use video mode either, but the wireless flash is nice. and with the AF on the 7D I actually get more keepers. I know there is a few posts here and there about issues with the 7D's AF but I've not seen any on mine. ISO is nice at higher settings, obviously no 5D mkII but not as horrendous as it's been made out to be. Easily managed in PP I think.

Mike please give us all some feed back asap as i too are thinking of going down this route
