40D to 1D MKII N (Yay or Nay)

my 2p
I have an N that I bought brand new and its easily the best camera I have ever used.. I also have a 40D which is a nice camera but the N is completly different beast altogether
the servo on the 40d is useless

the autofocus on the 1 series cameras is light years ahead of the non 1 series models

I could go on all night about how much better the N is over the others mentioned here but I wont bore you
just buy it and enjoy it

1D mkii should be fine, but be warned - it is bulky and heavy as a stone! 40D feels like a light toy in comparison, and I much prefer that. Another issue with 1D/s mkii cameras is extremely clumsy handling and menu system - I almost wish I had 3 hands. You literally have to press 2-3 buttons at the same time and turn a wheel to change anything (and there is no indication in VF of most such settings, unlike in 40D). Mk3 got slightly better in that respect, but I think not much. x/xxD series have the best handling of Canon cameras in my humble opinion. 40D AF is excellent up to 3m, but from there it is all downhill.

My choice would be 7D for cropping, new features and reasonable weight.

Hahah just got an email back from 2 second hand shops here is what one offered...

£200 for a mint condition 40D
£150 for a mint condition 28mm f1.8

I think I am going to sell them on tp!!! :D

(Josh, I will send you a pm)

Could you PM me that place name please?

I actually miss that on my MkIV. You never change anything by mistake on a MkII!!!

Can I ask why you think you will get lower count and better condition with the MkII over the MkIIn?

The 'N' version superseded the original MkII meaning they will be generally newer but no guarantee's over condition and shutter counts. As said, mine is immaculate and had only 13k clicks.
DB

Because for the same price I would expect a lower shutter count and or better condition camera in buying a mkii than a mkiin, for the very reason you yourself state, that the n was an upgrade to the mkii, I fail to see why you would think otherwise?
You would expect the newer camera to cost less if like for like??

I'm so glad this thread has been a thumbs up for the move from 40D to mkII as I have just done it (literally just waiting for the knock at the door with the mkII).

I went for the N purely based on the screen size. Got it on ebay at a silly cheap buy it now price earlier in the week from a guy who has jumped ship to the D3 and is selling off loads of pro Canon gear so I guess he just wanted to shift it quick.

So for me the N vs non N didn't involve money considerations. What I would say is that I've used the non N coming from a 40D and that screen is very small compared to what you'll be used to from the 40. As above, if you don't think that will be a problem, then go for the non N and save the dosh.

Think it will take a few days shooting to get used to the menus cause, as mentioned previously, its very different from the xxxD and xxD series.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

As it hasn't arrived yet and I haven't seen the condition, this may or may not be as good as it sounds. The feedback on the seller was very good, and although there were a few cosmetic marks on the body, the seller told me that it had a full service (new shutter etc) 25k clicks ago so I took the decision that it was worth the gamble. I paid £500. I'll let you know if I end up with egg on face...

I noticed that in the completed listings, you lucky b****r :bat:

When it arrives get on here and tell me if its a good idea :D

Jumped from 20D to 1D MKIIn 2 years back, haven't looked back, love it to bits, although you need extra thumbs to move between menu's, but you'll get use to the controls. If your into action photography, miles better than XXXD, XXD or XD models, even though it has a few miles on the clock and they're boasting extra MP's, would I get a 7D, no thanks, 1D MKIIn suits all my needs and some. Happy shoot at ISO 800 - 1600 with no problems as grumpybadger image proves. (fantastic shot by the way)

+1 to that, think I will keep my 1d mkii as a backup to my backup if the prices are this low now lol.

This thread made my decision to upgrade to 1d ii  thanks everyone

Was winning the bidding on a 1dII today, lost out by a tenner with five seconds left!! :'( Funny thing is I said oh, I won't bother putting X amount up becuase it's only at Y, so instead I put in Z. When the guy beat me he was still below X. :bang:

Any good strategies for ebaying!! I really don't have the hang of this

I wish I had never started this bloody thread, the cost of a 1DmkII on ebay has gone up about £60!!

Ahh ok, I always thought the noise was bad on the mkII

I just want better AF and a 1D

Just unsure about only having 520mm when I have been use to 640mm, 120mm sounds a lot...

you could crop anyway to gain back that apparent focal length, still might be better quality than 40D after you ddid that ;)

something to think about.

Agreed

When I was looking at Christmas it was £500, Jan was up to £525-550ish. Was too busy in Feb to price watch, then this month the cheapest Buy It Now is £635!!!
