Hi,

I currently have a 40D but I sometimes end up pushing it to the extremes, when it comes to AF. I shoot mainly birds with my 400mm f5.6.

Should I upgrade to a 1D mkII N or keep my 40D, my only worry would be loosing the cropping factor. I like showing the landscape in my shots so maybe this could be an advantage

How does noise differ, not a big worry as I rarely go above iso 800.

Thanks

7D :)

Drop the N. Get a 1DII. Same sensor and AF for less cash! I sold my 1DII for £600

Noise is better than 40D (I've done like for like comparison of my 1DII and Sue's 40D from the same hide in the same appalling light and 1DII is definitely better). AF is much better.

Or wait a bit longer as 1DIII are getting cheaper...

Ahh ok, I always thought the noise was bad on the mkII

I just want better AF and a 1D

Just unsure about only having 520mm when I have been use to 640mm, 120mm sounds a lot...

I certainly got some stuff in very poor light at ISO1600 on the 1DII that I am happy with. I'll see if I can post an example.

Here it is

ISO1600, 1/25s, f/4 - so proper dark. This has had a slight run in Noise Ninja but makes a fine A3 print...

I went from a 40D to a 1DIIN. Found the 1D superb. A little bit lost in resolution, but the dynamic range was awesome. I found it very slightly noisier than my 40D. Loved using it with the 24-105L, such a capable combo. Only sold because I love shooting wildlife and also wanted a slightly more compact camera

Paul, that looks pretty dam good for iso 1600

So looking at classifieds I could probably get around £430 for my 40D and I would have to sell my 28mm f1.8 hopefully £330.

That gives me £760, easily enough for a mkII but could I afford a mkII N ?

well I sold my 1d MKII n a while back got £880.00 on ebay for it so may be a bit less now..:)

Ok, I just found to more MkII N's for £700. I have emailed the shops to see if they do part exchange...

Or should I just get a MkII? I am worried it might become dated as I will want to keep the next camera I buy for a few years (through uni)

Depends if you view smaller screen as dated. I've just sold a 1DsII to part fund a 1DIV and although it is old with a small screen, the images off it are stunning. I wouldn't worry. Whatever fits your budget and timing really

Ok, thanks a lot for all the help :D

Are there any websites that show the differences e.t.c before I start getting lost in the web.

I sold on my 40D to get a 1D MKII, as I was getting more and more frustrated by the poor (compared to a 1 series) a/f speed.

Not that the 40D is a bad camera, it just couldn't compete with canon's pro bodies.

Never regretted the change one little bit

I went 50d to mk2n then to mk3 (got a very good price on one), you wont regret getting any of the 1 series. Amazing camera and the af is something else.

Built like a tank though!

Hmm, doesn't seem like there is much of a difference

I can't afford a mkIII so I think I will try and get a mkII N...

I went from a 400d to a 1dmk11n as i was offered an 'as new' body with just over 1000 actuations - brilliant upgrade!

I've had both the N and none N, to me the only thing better on the N is the screen size.

I went from having 2 40d's to 2 40d's and a 1dmk2 as i got it silly cheap. After getting that i have now got rid of both 40d's and got a 1dmk2n to replace them. Reason being i wasnt using them, the idea of 2 cameras was one per lens, but i was constantly changing and only realy ever using the 1d. I often used a 1.4tc on the 400mmf5.6 on the 1d to make up the range difference and found the results where better then the 40d due to the quicker more acurate af.

The bigger screen on the mk2n is nice but i havent really used it in anger to compare other then that.

So should I get a mkII or a mkII n is the ±£400 worth it

Thats iso1600. Wow!

Cracking pic by the way........... Spot on with timing.

£400 i doubt it, but personally out of the models i saw the gap was only £50, ok the one i went for had more paint scratches (nothing major) the mk2n only had 37,502 clicks, so i went for that over the mk2, which 102,010.

I picked up a MkIIn with only 13k on the clock a few months ago - upgraded from a 50D and asked pretty much the same questions as you.

Probably paid ever so slightly over the odds but the camera has such low clicks and is immaculate...I mean, like new!

The other thing you will notice with the MkII over the MkIIn is the buffer - if you have a tendency to machine gun you'll find the buffer does fill up quite quickly.

You should be able to pick up a 1DII for £650 or less. If you can pick up an N for less than £750 I would go for that.

Go for the 1d mkii, you will get a lower count/better condition than an n and the only worthwhile difference is purely the screen IMHO and that is such a small difference in practice as to not be worth worrying about.

Interestingly enough I've been considering the same move from 50D to MKIIn - especially now the prices have taken a little tumble on the MKIIn

It's either that or a 7D - but there is something about getting a 1 series that really appeals to me!

Yes they seem to be very cheap now, lot of camera for the money and no focus problems.

According to DP Review, its the difference between 20 RAW and 22 RAW. Must say, I never noticed a buffer issue on my 1DII - although I did on my 1DsII

Can I ask why you think you will get lower count and better condition with the MkII over the MkIIn?

The 'N' version superseded the original MkII meaning they will be generally newer but no guarantee's over condition and shutter counts. As said, mine is immaculate and had only 13k clicks.

I went 10D to 50D (which I still have) and then 1Dmk2 (which I love). Its big its cumbersome but two of my lenses which were horrid on the 50D work on the 1D (an old 70/200 f4 - not L series and a 100/300 f5.6). IQ is wonderful, its better at Iso 800 than the 50D, that'll be because it has less pixels then on a bigger sensor, progress isnt always progress.
Crop factor - its a 1.3 instead of a 1.6, not such a big deal, especially as you'll be able to crop if you need to.

Get the 1D, its a very good camera. It has an un-definable something to it, which the smaller bodies just dont have.

I always pick it up in preference to the 50D. Oh and its pretty weather resistant too. Hope you have an external flashgun. :)

I'm looking at leaping up to a mkII. Whre's the best place to look. MPB don't have any. Ffordes seem a bit pricey. I'll condsider eBay but rather buy from shop or on here. Budget £600. I watched some on eBay go for about £450 in shocking condition ~100-150k (super scruffy ;)). Most seem to be about £550 with ~80-125K with the odd scratch and nick. Does that sound about right?

Hahah just got an email back from 2 second hand shops here is what one offered...

£200 for a mint condition 40D
£150 for a mint condition 28mm f1.8

I think I am going to sell them on tp!!! :D

(Josh, I will send you a pm)
