My nephew Dan asked me to take some photos of him and his bride Amy at a Wedding party for family and friends last weekend, they had previously got married on the spur of the moment on Whistler Mountain whilst on holiday in Canada.
I must say it made a nice change to have the Bride and Groom actually looking at ‘me’ for a photo session.
It was getting towards the end of the party when the shutter on my 40D with battery grip stopped working, no AF, no shutter!
Luckily I had my 20D as backup so I could continue the shoot.
On investigation, after I removed the pack and put in a single battery and the camera performed perfectly refitted the battery grip and it was still OK so I guess it was just a bad connection from the grip inside the camera.

The strange thing was although the camera shutter did not work in normal mode, it did in live view mode albeit I had to use manual focus!
Any ideas why this should be?

My 40D failed it's shutter. Just locked up, err99 and I had to remove the battery to reset it. It worked fine for a few shots then did it again. Finally it gave up on every shot.

Might be worth getting it checked out.

The early stages of shutter failure in my experiance. Mine did the above, i removed battery...it worked...then i started getting lines in my shots, and then it died completely. With just over 20k on it.

It's more likely the grip - is it the same grip you had with your 20D?

I started getting a few lockup on my 40D and then the vertical shutter button completely stopped functioning on the grip. I gave the grip contacts a damn good clean and shoved the springy bits in and out a few times and touchwood not a problem since.

I;ve had AF fail on a lens. Still have the lens and it was great for 1000 shots at a gig on sunday night

I clean the lens contacts, power contacts, the AF sensor and sometimes just a power off reset solves things. they're not just mechanical things anymore...

thats what happend to mine yesterday, phoned canon this morning sending it back for repair today. lets hope the repair lasts longer than the original did. also mine was 2 days out of warranty but as long as you got the receipt canon give you another month :)

Yep, sounds familiar, mine failed, showing the good ol' err99 message, sent to Lehmanns through Canon, all sorted back & working in a week, cracking service. Mine has had a hard life though, so couldn't really complain & gave me a good excuse to buy another one while it was away!
