40D or 60D or 600D

I was going to upgrade my 350D kit to a 600D body only but after reading a few posts there seems to be a thought about the xxD range being better.

I want to shot video as well so does that limit choice?

I have a canon 18-200 and sigma 70-300 lens so only need the body (and battery grip). MPB photographic may mean some xxD are in range now as was looking at £500 change to a new 600D but could spend a lot less for a 40D

Advice?

I don't know much about the 60D tbh, but with regards a 600d or a 40d, then I'd go for the 40d. Although it doesn't shoot video the camera takes better pictures.

I upgraded from a 450d to a 7d, but also wanted a 2nd camera I could use in most situations. I sold the 450d for £250 and bought a 40d for £295... it's a much better camera and basically cost me £45 to upgrade to it.

I haven't used the 40d much as only just got it, but so far I honestly can't tell the difference between the picture quality on it and the 7d!
 
As far as i'm aware the 40D does not record video.

The 600D i'm sure should do all you want it to do fine and there should be some good offers on this model now.

I would consider eigher a 60D or the newer 650D with the latest digit 5 processor as it seems this new camera is set up more for video with auto focusing.
 
Almost forgot the reason the 60D is favourable with videomakers is Magic Lantern, which can do all sorts of tricks
 
Just a note, the 40D doesn't do video, if that is an important factor for you, then you need to be looking at the 60D - if you are wanting an xxD body.
 
The reason for an upgrade is I want the video function so that's the 40d out.

Then I guess it's an auto focus on video decision between the 60 and 650, budget wise they are about equal
 
If you want it for video then I would go for the 650D. It's ability to autofocus while video recording and the new STD lenses which are very quiet and slow focus would be very usefull.

alternatively just buy a video camera for a couple of hundred and save a load of money
That was the advice I got given which I ignored lol
and now I am much poorer
The 600d and 7d I bought are ok for video but a video camera would do it better
the 650d seems to be the choice if video is your main aim and you want a dslr

If you can afford the 60D then go for it,the XXd range has always been better build quality than the XXXd range and there is a defiinate improvement in quality of images as I found when moving from the 400D to the 40D

How so? Doesn't the 600D have a far better sensor in it?
 
There is also the fact that the 650D doesn't need magic lantern as it has manual control over video settings it also had the hybrid sensor so for video it uses a combination of phase detect and contrast detect auto focus thats claimed to speed up the auto focus when shooting video.

I use the 500D with magic lantern at present, the quality of the video it shoots is superb and in my case only let down by the fact that I cant use an external mic with the 500D.

This was shot on a very overcast and wet day.

I've got a 60D and it's a fantastic camera for the price however, as others have pointed out, the new 650D would be far better for video. I've ordered a 650D for the wife as an upgrade to her 550D and for me to use for video. I've only done around 30 seconds of video on a dslr so far but I think that may well change with the arrival of the 650D.
The 60D has the benefit of better ergonomics and a second dial and top screen, but if you're shooting with a 350D now then you'll be used to the layout of the similar 650D.
 
I had a 350d and went up to a 60d - the layout of buttons and easily ability to 'switch' stuf was the big seller - and once you have a rotating screen you will never look back - its awesome !
 
Not sure if I am more confused or not, but thanks for all your inputs.

In response to getting a separate video camera, I have one that sits in the draw and I forget to take places. (plus it's mini DV). I use my iPhone for the odd video but want something better in my hand ans since I have the DSLR with me that's why I want the video capability

So back to a budget question really but to sum up:
60d good choice and within budget (2nd hand)
600d in budget new, but no auto focus on video
650d a stretch for the budget!

Just thought of a Another element to consider....my lens and compatibility
Sigma 70-300 APO DG
Canon 18-135 efs
