1D2, you'll not regret it, very quick AF and fast frame rate make it perfect for aviation.
Just be aware that any EF-S lenses you own won't fit.

It's not without it's faults, you need two hands to change most of the functions and it's big and heavy in comparison to the 40D. I had the 1DmkIIN which was very similar. The user interface isn't intuitive and you'll get sick of carrying it around. But it's still one of the best sports (and aviation) cameras around.

I currently have both and the 1 series is in a completely different league than the 40D the only feature the 40D has that I really like which my mk2 does not - is Live view
in every other department its a Ferrari v Fiat 500
the auto focus and servo on the 40D has lot to be desired - the difference is night and day

you can get away with 1600 on a 40D but anything over that looks awful, the mk2 is just passable at 3200
I usually stick to 800ISO with the 40D any thing more and the mk2 has to come out

I use both at the moment and find there's very little at all between them in terms of IQ and noise.
The AF is like night and day though - in fact after a day out with the 1D Mark 2 you would think the AF on the 40D was broken.
Somebody mentioned filling the frame - cropping images from the 1.3 crop 1D Mark 2 isn't as forgiving as the 40D.
It can take a while to get used to using the 1D Mark 2 - not the most intuitive and the screen isn't as good as the 40D.
Size wise - my 40D is gripped so the 1D Mark 2 is the same size.
