Hadn't used my 40D for several months. It was error-free for 3 years hard labour between 2007 and 2010. When I switched it on and went to 'My Menu' settings to format the card, the Format option (one of my picks, obviously) was missing! Just a blank line where it should be...

When I go to re-register it, it tells me I will need to delete one of the others to make room, and when I go to the blank line and select it nothing happens.

I can go to the default menu and format the card OK

How queer!

Anyone any ideas?

Try a hard reset by removing the date/time battery for a few minutes?

Must be some minor firmware glitch.
What's your firmware version?

Firmware is 1.0.5 - never been updated!

I can try a hard reset, though I am guessing I would want to sit down and make a note of all my settings C1, C2, C3, all my back button set-ups and so on, which I will long have forgot since it became my back-up. Might be easier just to live with it!

Still slightly stunned about it, as it is literally the first problem I have had in 7 years of using Canon dSLRs (10D...40D...7D).

Lol

It couldn't really be a more minor fault though could it.

Try updating it to 1.1.1 firmware

It is very strange!

Cheers - will give it a go - I did the 7D a month or so back and that was painless enough.

I'm not familiar with the 40D but I know that on many Nikons the "format card" option is not allowed on "my menu", presumably to avoid accidental erasure. Maybe it's the same for your camera.

Thank for the input - the option was definitely there - I was using it routinely for 3 years.

Canon must trust their users more than Nikon (kidding :D)

I updated the firmware, but that was not the answer. Next I set about clearing all the entries with the intention of entering them again to see if it would accept 6 entries. When I went into the sub-menu to delete them, I found that there were 2 AEB's listed with the 2nd greyed out. I just deleted the greyed out one and replaced it with 'Format' and it accepted it no problem. 'Format' now back on 'My Menu'.

Very odd. The 2nd AEB didn't show up in the My Menu 'working menu' - it just gave the blank line you see in the demo above. I could not have accidentally picked it myself because once an option is added to 'My Menu', it is greyed out in the selection list so you can't pick it twice. It seems like the 'Format' option I added had mutated during storage into 'AEB'. Then the camera chose not to display it because it was already on the list.

Curiouser and curiouser...
