40d lens recommendation

First of all, hi :)

New to the forum but it looks pretty good. Recently started doing a few weddings, I have a 40d and a sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 lens. This is mostly for photographing outside, nice scenes etc. It quickly became obvious that this was near useless indoors for weddings, as the exposure is just too long and most things are blurred, don't even go into the reception.

Anyway, just wondering what you'd recommend. Looking at a couple of Tamron and Sigma f2.8 lenses. The issue is, what focal range do you find most useful. 17-50 or 24-70.

This will be mostly small weddings, civil ceremony style things while I'm starting out.

Thanks

I think the wedding togs will be along soon, but have heard that the canon 24-70 f/2.8 is a preferred lens also the nifty fifty is great in low light situations.....

Most of our customers who hire Canon lenses for weddings choose either:
* EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
* EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

that's a freaky coincidence.

I already have the 17-55mm in my shopping basket on your site. But I'm starting to sway toward the 24-70mm because I'm worried about distortion. Also wondering if it's cheaper for me to buy it cheap and sell it on ebay if I'm not happy with it.

Has anyone got any samples for comparison between these 2 lenses?

Personal opinion for me is that a 17-55 will give you more flexibility on a crop body. If you had a 5D it would be 24-70 all the way.

it looks like i'll be going for 17-55, 18-50, whatever.

Canon prices might be out of reach right now, anyone good good experience or reviews of the Tamron/Sigma alternatives?

I use the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Found it to produce great images however the AF is noisy. Not at sharp as the Nifty 50 but gives constant results throughout the range.

might pick up the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and the nifty fifty, can get both for £300.

ordered the nifty, when it arrives I'll have a play and if I need zoom then I'll rent the 17-55 for a small wedding coming up at the end of the month.

my nifty arrived. I'm very impressed.

With my general mucking about in the house at dinner I found the 50mm to be too narrow on my 40d, but I guess in larger function rooms that isn't an issue. Still interested in getting the 18-50mm, might order on Monday.

The 1.8 makes a huge difference indoors. Thanks for the advice all.

I use the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and if my bag was big enough to put camera+lens it, it would never leave the camera!

Amazing lens, little heavy and noise when Auto focusing, but other then that, spot on for me :)

but I guess in larger function rooms that isn't an issue.

I'd say it'll still be a big problem for you, the nifty on a crop body is ideal for portraits but you'll struggle to get more than two people in given the lack of space at alot of venues.

I got the nifty mostly for fun and for emergencies in dark receptions etc. I'll be picking up the tamron 17-50 or the sigma 18-50 for most other occasions I think.

Any more thoughts on the 24-70?
