Hi all

I presently own the 40D with 24-105mmL & a 50mm 1.8 but ... I'm finding I just don't want to have a big DSLR hanging from my side all day when out & about with the family etc, which means I'm not getting as many good quality shots as I'd like to.

I have been looking at the mirrorless cameras as I don't really want to sacrifice on iq so MFT & compacts are not on my agenda
I'd also like to ad the photography is purely a hobby & I don't earn a living from it.

I've been looking on enviously at the fuji xpro-1 & Sony nex-7 (although I love the retro style of the fuji it is very expensive somim kinda of setting my sites on the Sony)

I would like to know if anyone has experience of the nex-7, or if you have sold up to buy a more compact system.. Do you have any regrets in doing so?

I would basically be swapping my current kit for the..
NEX-7
Sony 18-200mm lens for nex
Sony 50mm 1.8 for nex

Any ideas on how the iq would fair against my current set up? (I like street style photography & general snappy stuff)
If I thought the Sony would be superior I'd probably switch tbf

Thanks

I wouldn't discount m43 without looking, iq is fantastic with good quality lenses that are available. The xpro1 is very expensive with only 3 lenses currently available, also Sony does not have a great range of e-mount lenses yet and the lenses are huge more like normal DSLR lenses so in some ways defeats the purpose of downsizing. My advice would check m43 before pulling the trigger

Thanks, it's something I need to give more consideration to especially regarding MFT.
Initially I didn't like the idea of the nex7 & prefered a more traditional looking camera, but after reading hundreds of reviews on the nex7 I must admit it sounds like an extremely capable little camera (especially iq wise) & with lots of other perks in a small package.

I just want to have a feel of one before I commit to a new system

I am in the process of doing the same thing but have opted for the Fuji X10 as that way I have no system at all. It should be delivered tomorrow! Its certainly worth a look :)

I must admit I do love the look of the fuji x10, but obviously with sensor being that much smaller it will not have the iq of DSLR size sensor. I'm hoping I can persuade the other half to sell her lumix zx1 & buy the fuji x10 :D; but for her a camera must point click and just work.

So I've decided to sell my 40D, 24-105 & 50 1.8..
When I attempt to put it in the classified section I receive a message saying I must agree all points of the agreement to proceed, but I can't find the page to do this. Anyone have an idea?

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I'm thinking of ditching my 50D kit (18-200 Canon IS, 50mm 1.8, grip, flash etc..) for either a NEX-7 or GX1 - still quite undecided. The Sony's tilting screen and EVF are tempting, but the expensive / limited lenses (without pricey adapters) is making me pause for thought.

What did you go for in the end? Any regrets?

Thanks!
M

If it's any help, my DSLR kit (50D, 10-22mm, 17-40mm, 70-200mm) is being ditched because all I have used over the last year is a GF1. If I were doing it all over again I would give the GX1 some serious consideration. Image quality on the GF1 is fine - certainly more than good enough for agency sales. The GX1 is supposed to be better.

Im so impressed by the nex7, I have absolutely NO regrets about selling up at all. Personally I find it a much more intuitive camera to use than the 40D & it's so small & light its just a pleasure to use. Some people think the lenses look too big for the camera but I don't (maybe so on the nex5 but it balances well on the 7), the iq the sensor can produce with good glass is amazing (best crop bar none according to dpreview).
So yeah, I'm delighted with the nex7. If you're going to nit pick then the down sides are.. autofocus, fast but not as fast as my 40D & L lens was; & at the moment there is only 1 native high quality lens (zeiss 24mm) but a G zoom is on the horizon & also there are endless adapters for fitting other lenses if you wish & don't mind manual focus. The focus peaking I think is amazing, makes manual focus very quick for those of us that aren't used to it.

...the old paradox, we want DSLR feature but in compact form. I've tried many over the years, including G1, GF1, Nex5, D-Lux4, G12... but feel most satisfied with the Nikon V1 I have now. Of course, I owned Nikkors and the V1 can use them, which was a great advantage.

What bit of the DSLR do you need the most? If it's wider angle, dynamic range and resolution, then Nex [but be aware the lenses aren't that much smaller in real terms than the 24-105L]. If it's telephoto, PDAF focus and operational speed, then V1 [nothing's as quick]. If you want the middle ground then micro 4/3rds, which offers a decent compromise on resolution vs speed.
