~Had a search but couldnt come up with anything relevent...

So this may go down like a lead balloon for giving away trade secrets! but I have just got myself a 40d from a 300d and there are so many more functions to choose from its mind blowing :):):)...

However im going to rockingham raceway for a trackday session on Saturday and taking the 40d for it first run panning.

So my question is I'd like to setup a custom mode on my dial that would best suit panning moving cars?

Im thinking along these lines, what do you guys set/think?

TV Mode
Default ISO: Auto
Quality: Large JPG
AF: Servo
Drive: Hi Speed
Metering: Partial
Default AF points: All

Thanks in advance

Rockingham is rubbish unless you have access trackside or from the roof of the pit garages or pit wall.

I've never really bothered with the custom functions, but AI SERVO focussing, high speed shutter if you must, Quality - up to you, ISO - depends on the weather - I don't trust auto, Tv mode and experiment with shutter speeds. I would manually select a focus point as well.

Thanks Andrew,

Not been to Rockingham with the Beemer before but as we are there with the car driving I would imagine I would get limited access around the pit areas while not in the car driving. I hear that the roof of the garages is the best but you need something longer than 200mm?

Yes. There are two locations where the public can get half decent photos. One is at Tarzan hairpin, the other is the pit roof, but here you do need a long lens as you're shooting over quite a wide pit lane (about 3 times wider than most), and a wide run off area before you get to the track.

Personally, I would never use Auto ISO, as the lowest it can go is 400. Now, thats fine on a horrible grey day like today, but if you're shooting in bright sunlight it's way too high. Just keep an eye on the conditions and adjust the ISO accordingly, it's very quick to do on a 40D and it shows the setting in the viewfinder.

I also tend to only use the centre AF point, rather than all of them when I'm doing motorsport, it stops mis-focusing on the wrong car/the barrier/grass etc.
