Yes
 just got a 40D but ive stummbled at the starting block:bonk:

Im trying to set the focus point in the middle so that when i aim and half press the shutter it bleeps and lights up the centre focus point......i just cant seem to get my head around it:bang:

The instruction manual says

1 "press the AF selection point button the seleected AF point will be displayed in the viewfinder and on the LCD panel.....mines not:thinking: when i press this button they blink for a milisecond in the viewfinder but not on the LCD. It also wont allow me to change them as the manual suggests in 2 page 76

2 "select the AF point"
To select an AF point, you can either turn.....and then it goes to show me the 3 buttions/wheels they are the main back whell, the top scroll whell and the back toggle.

I only seem to be able to use the back toggle button as the other 2 dont do jack for me:thinking:

im lost ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh help before it goes in the bin lol:lol:

If that doesnt work your screwed.

if i press the * button this bleeps and focuses but then i have to press the shutter button to take the shot. Onmy 30d i only have to press the shutter button half way to achieve the same.

bet im doing something really silly

The power switch has an effect. There's Off, On, and then On a bit more. More stuff happens if you have it in the 'On-a-bit-more' hockey stick position.

After that, there are a ton of configuration options that allow you to confusicate matters a great deal more.

First off, are you in a 'creative' mode AV, TV etc.?

Perhaps a custom function has been set before you got the camera, try clearing all custom functions, reset it back to defaults.

Im in manual and the on off switch is right the way up. Ive just gone through that video and went on to my c.fnIII and the went to auto focus /drive and went to no. 3 which is the af point selection method and changed ot to normal. Having done this i can now move the focus point to wherever i want it, but still when it comes to pointing at something and half pressing the shutter this does not light up and bleep and focus the dam thing.

sounds like your in the wrong focusing mode, if you press af drive and move the top finger wheel and change it to "one shot" it should work for you.

what happens when you press af-on at the back, you could have set it to back button focusing.

nothing at all noticable happens when i push this button Andy

reset all the custom functions, someone had it set for back button AF (or learn to love it as I think back button AF rocks)

If you go on the menu, go to the second to the last icon, has a picture of a camera, then go down to reset custom functions.

Do i have toreset them all individually or is there one button that kind of does it all a format camera back to factory settings one. Does this back button focusing force you to push this button first then the shutter button to take the shot  seems an odd way to take a pic having to push two buttons if thats the case.

I just want to be able to half press the shutter button and it sets focus via the centre spot then i take the pic as ive done for years on my 30d

That was my initial thought, hence the question about was it new or not. Looks like you've had some good advice since I last posted so I'll leave it there. :)

i could of swore i reset all custom functions when i got it :bonk: i did im sure i did :gag:. Just done it again and sure as eggs are eggs its working but it didnt reset all settings back to factory as i had previously set review time to 4 seconds and this has stayed as has the red eye on and the shoot without card off  so im right baffled now

As long as everything is working ( at last :p)

Sounds like the AF is set on the * button. to put it back on the shutter button you need to change a custom function C.Fn.IV 1, I think.

Thanks for all your help guys

So are you 40D users happy with it any probs. i should be aware of?
The first thing i noticed is how the iso differs we dont seem to be able to up in increments like we could on the 30D also it only goes up to 1600 i would have expected further (apart from the h) Just suppose its about getting used to a new system/layout of everything now.

cheers again

Loving every minute I have it, nothing ever goes wrong (touchwood), great iso all the way up to 3200. Great £400 ever spent in ages. :) You gonna love it.

Is that 1600 or 16oo. There's a difference. I suspect you have the Highlight tone Priority custom function set.

On the 40D the ISO can be set to go up in 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments. C.Fn1, 2
It also has a H setting which is 3200 C.Fn 1 3.

Dont start with the custom functions again, we have had another of that in this thread to last a lifetime. :D

ok i can see this C.fn being a right pain in my neck but again im new to this 40D so im guessing i gotta get used to this system of all things being in a custom fuction setting

perhaps a good read of the manual has to be done and familiarize myself with all the new features in a new way. ahhhhh:nuts: change i hate change

Hi Glad its all sorted, I have the 40D and spent a holiday reading the Charlotte Lowrie field guide. There are a multitude of options for most things and I have to keep going back and re-reading; a lot of things you tend to ignore but it is worth going back and experimenting, as Andy1701 says once you get used to Back Focus it quite easy and flexible.
Hope you get as much enjoyment out of your 40D as I do; I also have the 400D, (the sell value makes it worth keeping) and sometimes get into a muddle when using it.

Glad its all sorted for you, i have a 40D + 50D, and image quality wise their pretty similar, the 40D was my first dslr, so it took a bit of time to get used to menus etc but well worth it when out in the field and the lights fading

Sorry Andy - David1701, he mentioned the Back Focus setting; you mentioned other helpful comment - phew!.
