Yes
I have recently bought a 400mm f5.6 lens and took a few shots with my 7d.
Would you keep it or not ? centre point focus on the corner of the Ariel.

shot at 1/1600 f5.6 iso 100

shot at 1/500 f8 iso 100.

The bottom of the photos is down to me.

Are these JPGs straight out of the camera? The left hand side of the aerial looks sharp enough to me. Remember depth of field will be fairly shallow at that focal length and close distance, which is why the right hand side of the aerial looks softer. Obviously it's slightly better at f/8 due to the greater focal plane. Personally I'd be more inclined to shoot some test pics of more realistic targets e.g. ducks at pond.

A couple more from my 60d

1/800 f6.3 iso 200

All jpegs straight from the camera

Why dont you put it on tripod, use live view x10 and focus manually, any subject but sky

I will give it a try as soon as it stops raining, typical british weather has once again put the dampers on things.

You have to take into consideration that you are shooting through more atmosphere with super-telephoto lenses. Air turbulence can be a contributing factor to what may appear to be poor performance of a lens.

I`m not sure what you think is wrong with it, could you explain a bit further bud?

some shots dont look sharp even though i have checked the focus is centred on the subject. I seem to get consistent sharp results with my 60d though.
I will try and find some examples, or take some shots in manual focus asap.
