Hi all
I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and have been looking at the 400D on canons Ebay page. My question is that would i notice the difference of the 400D to the 450D as it would be my first DSLR.
Thanks for any replies.

Hi and welcome suppose that one of the big differences between them is that the 450D has live view and the 400D doesn't. The 1000D is the latest thing so that might be worth a look too, or, there seem to be good deals about on the metal bodied 40D.

Regards Mark.

I would, if you can go for a 40D. I had a 400D and after six months wanted more. I now have a 40D and VERY happy. Go to a shop and handle both and see what you think. I personally wouldn't be swayed by Live view. I think you will find you hardley if ever use it.

Agreed but then i am knackered and it was the only thing i could think of :)

Regards Mark.

here is what the 450D has got that the 400D hasnt

12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
Digic III
SD/SDHC cards
Larger viewfinder
Live view mode, including contrast-detect AF
Improved 9-point AF system
Spot metering
3.0" LCD monitor
Redesigned menus (including My Menu as seen in 40D)
Slightly redesigned info display
Continuous shooting at 3.5fps for up to 53 JPEG (6 RAW)
ISO setting displays in viewfinder and ISO button
New, larger, higher capacity battery
14 bit A/D converter and processing
Multi-shot self-timer mode
Highlight Tone Priority (from 40D)
Auto Lighting Optimiser (boosts shadows after shooting)
Kit lens with IS

i think the structure goes 400D>1000D>450D>40D

I did go to my local shop and have a play with a few cameras(D60/450D/A300/D40 and a second hand 400D) and did like the feel of the 40D. But having only just got married the funds are tight:help:.

i have a couple of threads in the sports section and a couple in the nature and animal section nothing to special as im stupidly new to this game :)

just search threads started by me and you should find them easy enough

If your budget is restricted then I would say go for the 450D otherwise go for the 40D.
I've had my 450D for a couple of weeks now and I very pleased with it.
Liveview is pointless imho but the 3" screen is great for reveiwing your pics.
Spot metering is also a good feature that the 400D lacks.

Just married Mmm. You will want to upgrade the missus before you want to upgade a 40D. Still, your descision! :)

Tanks for all your replies. I think i will order the 450D at the weekend:clap:. I have read that the kit lens is a bit of a let down, can anyone recomend a replacement for about £200.

I also pondered this as well but opted for the kit lens to keep the cost of my initial purchase down.
Some people have said that the kit lens supplied with the 450D is an improved version of the kit lens supplied with the 400D (I've never owned the 400D so I can't really comment).
I would recommend getting the 50mm f/1.8mm prime lens (it can be had for around £60).
It really is a great lens for the price, (you'll find plenty of posts on here from people rating it).
When I bought my 450D, Jessops also do a deal for another £80 for a 4GB card and a Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens (for some reason this deal is now £599 rather than the £580 I paid).
It's quite a nice lens but because it doesn't support IS it's a bit of a b****r if like me you suffer from some camera shake so a tripod will be required (another pending purchase for me).
I'm not sure but I think the Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS Lens @ £159.99 (Jessops price) is the same lens as the kit lens?
Perhaps someone else can clarify this?
I've not looked at other makes but you wont get another Canon lens for £200 or less that has IS support.
Again this all depends how steady you are with holding the camera or perhaps you intend on mainly using a tripod?
If that is the case then IS won't be something that may concern you like it does me.

I'm sure other experience Canon users here can be a bit more helpful (I'm still a newbie tog myself :) ).
Good luck with your pending purchase, it really is a nice piece of kit.

i bought the canon efs 55-250mm IS lens you can get it for just under £200 great lens, but it is hard to get hold of at the min as demand is high but stocks are very low

The screen is bigger on the 450 but the resolution is the same so the screen to me appears less sharp. 400D's are at giveaway prices if you're in the market snap one up you're nlikely to be disappointed.
