Yes
I’m almost certainly going to make the jump from a 400d to a 7d in the next few weeks as I feel a bit limited by it now, but a little bit of me thinks that this might be quite a big jump to make. I have thought about the 50d and 60d, but I think I’ll just be looking to upgrade again in a year or so if I do.

I’d love to hear any advice or issues you encountered if you have made a similar jump.

I’ll be using it a lot for sports by the way.

I Just made the same jump...(well-ish) I was using a 450D and now own a new 7D , I have to say the higher ISO features do make a big difference to the shots. Thou you should think about why you need the 7D..as affectively the sensor is the same but they jammed more pixels on the 7D sensor. (This can produce higher noise levels).
7D does have all the little gizmos to make sure the noise level is kept low but will require a little tweaking in PP.

As you plan to shoot sports this would be a great upgrade, at 8fps you can't go wrong. I would recommend you trial the kit first hand to make sure you happy with it. I did the same and did test shots with the 60D and 7D and compared the 2. (not much in it to be fair)

cheers

Dan

I jumped 450D to 7D.

The image quality between the 60D / 600D and 7D will not be hugely different...

What is different is the build, handling and AF.

  • The build is rock solid with the metal body, weather sealed etc.. Heavier of course than the 6OD but fits my hand perfectly and is very comfortable to use.
  • The handling is very different. The settings dial on the back, the joystick, buttons on the top to set all the common elements like ISO, Drive, WB etc. make it very fast, easy and simple to operate.
  • The AF is fantastic...fast, flexible easily configurable and a joy to use for fast moving subjects... Even things like having different setups for AF in portrait and landscape that auto select as you move the camera make it hugely fast and flexible in use to make sure you don't miss your shot...

As you can tell, I love mine :)

Good luck

I made the same jump in January and haven't looked back........ Well until I took the 400D on holiday with me and realised how much of a toy it felt in comparison to the 7D

I too made the same jump 18 months ago shortly after the 7D was released.

Major things you'll notice straight away will be the multitude of AF options you now have, perfect for sports photography. Higher ISO performance will also amaze you, I regularly shoot at 3200 and get excellent results. Although probably not too useful for sports photography the facility of Live view can be extremely useful as well. Try Back button focussing, I've never gone back since enabling it!

The only real issue I had to begin with was remembering what button I had to press to select different options, for example selecting different AF modes. It can all be done from the LCD of course but obviously you'll want to learn the short cut buttons for speed. Even after 18 months I still have to resort to the manual to remind myself of some of the lesser used functions.

I guarantee in 6 months time when you pickup your 400D again you'll wonder how you ever coped!:)

I went from a 450d+kit lens to a 1d mkIII with L glass. Its amazing how fast you will pick everything up and the extra features will keep you going for a long time! Don't worry about it being a big jump. Canon make their cameras to be rather user friendly and if you know your way around the 400, you will be fine with any of their other cameras.

Okay…that’s settled. I’m going to bite the bullet and get one. I’ve been mulling this over for far too long now!

Thanks for the replies

I upgraded from a 400D to a 7D, and love the 7D. by the title of your site you will find the 7D great for sports with its 8 frames per second in high speed continuous also has a slower speed continuous, and the AF points already mentioned

Same here, I went from a 400 to a 7D. <Whisper Mode On> I also upgraded to L series lenses, but don't let my wife know <Whisper Mode Off>

500D to 7D here, you'll love it although you may waste a couple of frames listening to the fps firing away when you first pick it up.

Hoping to make a slightly longer jump to the 7D from a 350D myself later this year, and am confident that this is the best option, rather than moving to a 60D.

A couple of great shots there!

I've only just upgraded from a 1000D to a 60D. Wow, what a difference. I couldn't quite afford the 7D, but the savings I have left will go towards some new glass so I think that's a good compromise.

This hobby is nearly as expensive as Moutain biking

I upgraded from a 400D to a 7D last year and have never looked back, the build quality, af, high iso capabilities are truly astounding !!! when paired with L series glass it is truly first class :-)
