Good evening folks.

I apologise as I know this has been done to death.

As a realistic crimbo prezzy i'm thinking about asking for a Canon 50d.

Is it the next logical step up from the 400D cost/performance wise?

Will I see vast improvements in AF and ISO performance?

What do you people that have gone from the 400D to the 50D thought about it?

What other options in the same price bracket are availible to me?

Exactly the same thing i was thinking about (you may want to have a look in at my thread) :D. Interested to read the responses too.

Many have suggested to me going for a second hand 40D as opposed to a 50D as the price difference isn't really justified for the spec difference between the 2. That means you have more money for better glass!! :D
 
im in the same boat , i was going to go for the 50d, but people have been saying about noise on the 50d so i dont now lol

i change my mind every two weeks anyway :)
 
Stretch to a 7d. I wouldn't swap my 400d for a 40/50d just because I don't think it would bring enough to the table.

At least the 7d has a few new toys ;)
 
A little while ago I made that very same jump from a 400D to a 50D. I'd never look back. I still have the 400D as a spare body at the moment but have only taken it out once when I did my first solo wedding. It stayed firmly in the bag. Having said that most of the photography I do is wildlife, landscape and motorsport.
This weekend I spent saturday at Silverstone and have come back with some really good results. The bonus of live view has proved great when photographing a sleeping owl. I shot some indoor shots at the wedding at 800iso and 1000iso which wouldn't be possible on the 400D and they are fine.
A great step up and a great camera.
Yes you will get more going to a 5d mkII or a 7D but with a baby on the way I just couldn't stretch that far.
 
I am thinking up upgrading from a 450d to a 50d. I have used a freinds 40d and 50d and both bodies handle a lot better for me.

Everytime I am about to buy a 50d recently a thought at the back of my mind keeps telling me to wait several months to see if I have enough saved for a 7D or wait to see if Canon do bring out a 60D that is cheaper than the 7D :bonk:
 
i am already trying to snap a 50D from an Auction site .. my 450D is a great Camera but once u start thinking about getting heavier Lens , 50D is the way to go ... i wish i can afford a Full Frame but ...
 
I`m not so sure that you will see enough of a difference moving from either the 400D or 450D to either a 40D or a 50D. I moved to full frame from a 450D, but now it`s gone, I realise how great a camera the 450D is. Get some good glass in my opinion, this is where you will find the improvements. ISO would be a bit better and the camera may be a bit more solid but.......
 
I made the same upgrade only 3 months ago. I find the body balances far better with the Sigma 150-500 and the extra fps is a major bonus with sports events - but its a weighty combination at the end of day out. Seem to think the 50 focuses quicker or better than the 400 if you compare same shot with same lens and it is particularly noticeable on moving subjects. Having said all that I always take the 400 out with me and both are in constant use.
 
There will be a 60D not sure when at a guess 1st/2nd quarter 2010.

7D is NOT a 50 D replacement.

Canon now have a 4 tier range:

xxxD Amateur/Intro
xxD Amateur/Semi Pro
xD Semi Pro/Pro
1D Pro

imho upgrading from a 400D to a 40D or 50D is a very positive step forward, I went from a 350D to 40D and what a difference!!

Build quality, ease of use, fps, iq all in a different class!!
 
I went from the 450D to the 40D (second-hand, bought from here) and have not had a single regret. My reasons for doing so were because I needed lower noise at ISO1600 (and the ability to use ISO3200 in a pinch), more reliable AF and a higher burst rate is a great bonus.

Noise at high ISO is considerably better on the 40D. 1600 is no problem at all but 3200 can be a bit tricky to recover from sometimes.

I don't use the focus & recompose technique as I mainly use very wide apertures (f/1.4 - f/2) so the recompose can make my original focus point out of focus. Hence, I use the outer AF points. On the 450D, the outer 8 points are only a linear sensor but on the 40D they're all cross-hair types so can detect contrast on two planes. AF is now much more accurate.

I do some gig photography under very rapidly changing lighting so take bursts of shots and pick the best lit ones. The higher burst rate (and bigger buffer) is handy for this although I was never in too much too bad a state with the 450D.

Also, the feel of the camera is much, much nicer than the 450D.

I'm getting many more keepers with the 40D than I did with the 450D so it's been a worthwhile upgrade.

If you don't have any specific need for the 40/50D, spend money on glass instead and you can take that new glass to a new body later on if you do decide to upgrade it.

dont you mean five tier because the 1000D has its place at beginner. oh and canon already had a xD model which is the 5D and now the 7D

No the 1000D is an xxxD camera and yes the 5DII and 7D are at the same level but aimed at different markets/users.

By the way this all comes from a Canon UK seminar I was at last week-I am not dreaming it up honest!!

Not vast but you will see an improvement

I went 400d to 40d and don't regret carrying the extra weight - I think I would be hard pushed to tell photos taken with the 400d from the 40d but the 40d is a lot easier to adjust, has live view, spot metering and is much easier to hold

Guys these comments are priceless, not something you would get in Jessops or Currys. Please keep them comming its definately giving me food for thought.
 
I also went to a 50D from a 400 recently. I agree with earlier posts - a great move & no regrets. Much better handling and the faster frame rate is good for motorsport.
