I'm thinking about selling my 400D and putting it towards a 40D, who else has done this and has it being worth it?

Also does anyone know what I am likely to get for my 400D + 18-55mm kit lens + 2 spare batteries? Trying to work out a used value from eBay is a nightmare!!

Any help greatly appreciated.

I upgraded from a 400D to a 50D and I was VERY happy I did it. It cost me a bob or two as I didn't trade in my 400D, I reckon I might just still use it from time to time. I had a few lenses which, of course will fit my 50D.

If you only have the kit lens with the 400D, maybe think about investing in some glass for that rather than changing the camera? It'll make more difference.

I am eyeing up some lenses too, the main attraction to the 40D is the lower noise when the ISO is cranked up, also the faster fps as I've been doing some sports stuff recently.

All depends how much I would get for the 400D though really as I would need to sell that to finance the 40D.

I would invest in some decent lenses before uprading the body.
This will make a bigger impact on your photos rather than a 40D with the 17-85mm IS kit lens (if this is the lens you choose).
I've been tempted to do the same as you but I as I am beginning to understand the quality of lenses, I am slowly planning on upgrading my lenses before I upgrade the body.

Worth it just for the change in build and size I think. The image quality from my 350d wasn't a whole lot different but the build quality was.

Yeah good point, that extra money I would be paying out for the 40D could get me a better kit lens (thinking the Tamron 17-50 f2.8).

Hard choice, I'm falling for the 40D yet craving new glass!!

Yes it does look like a much more solid body, I have a couple of friends' weddings to do later in the year and the 40D would be much better suited to them than the 400D I think.

Anyone have any ideas of the value of a used 400D with kit lens and 2 spare batteries??

I toyed with the idea of the 40D for the same reasons as you.
I've recently purchased a Canon 10-22mm which is my most expensive lens to date.
The price hikes are really frustrating because I would like to get a 17-55mm IS next but the latest price is just crazy.

Yeah it's typical that when I get round to buying some kit it's just after all the price rises, fast to put them up but it will be interesting to see how fast they fall again once the pound regains some value

The best things I found when I swapped from 400 to 40
1) the few extra frames / sec. were very useful for shooting moving tagets ( horses mostly)
2) the weight / size of the thing was just more "managable"
3) the digic III processor gave more "natural colours" I thought especially with the 24-105

I am glad I changed.

Thats definately making me want it more Cobra/Chris!!

Just browsing the buy/sell forum, seems you can buy a used 40D for around the £400 mark, I like the sound of that, still need to find out how much I could sell my 400D for though, I'm hoping to get around the £250 mark I think.

I think that's a top end price you're hoping for. it all depends on camera condition and number of clicks, not to mention timing of the advert so it's the only 400d for sale etc. Personally, I think you'll be looking at more like £200-£225 (shipped).

Either way, good luck with the sale and enjoy the 40d when you get one. They are a cracking bit of kit!

There will be a 40D with 9K clicks and 9 months old for sale next week via another member.
I think he will be asking around £400 (don't quote me on that).
I really was tempted but my good lady pointed out my recent spending on photography kit :)

Thanks Hepburn, gives me a realistic idea of what I should be aiming for. The condition of it is excellent, it's been my baby for the last 12 months!! Once I have my 100 posts under my belt I'll advertise it in the for sale section then post a 'wanted' ad for the 40D.

Sounds right up my street Hashcake, doubt the 400D will be sold by then though, unfortunately!

There's bound to be others coming along. Just get your posting count up and get your advertised. Don't forget there are other places you can advertise. TP is a good place but not the only one where some of us hang out. And there's always fleabay.

Ah yes, fleabay, such a pleasure to use!! Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went from a 400D having owned it for 18 months, to a 40D which i've now owned 6 months, and in all honesty, i've never looked back.

The 40D is an awesome camera, and you wont regret the step up.

I got £290 inc. delivery for my 400D, with the 18-55mm lens & a lens hood, back in August.

i had a gander through ebay, i would agree with hepburn, unless really lucky somewhere around th £200 is all i think you could budget on getting

best of luck we all been there

Im extremely pleased with this lens - the improvement in sharpness, colours and everything else over the kit lens will be huge - its even noticeable on my 450D 18-55IS version. f/2.8 for whole range too.

Id say keep the body and upgrade the glass. If you avoid EF-S lenses you can always take them with you if you upgrade to FF later on.

My advice to to buy second hand from people on here. You can get some good prices on quality gear.
Personally, id make the jump asap. The 40d is a pleasure of a camera.
What is your budget Jambo?

I have gone from a 350/400D to a 50D and do not regret it BUT if I had did not have the lenses I have now I don't think I would have got the best from it. I was shooting polo last year with my 350 and 400 and got some great pictures - and this is one of the fastest moving sports where you have no idea where they are going next.

If you have set your heart on a 40D I would go for it but if you want the best I would go for some fast lenses first :D

i think the body will be priced at £250
the 18-55mm lens will be £40
and two spare batteries would be £20 (£10 each)

i do think though that you should keep the 400d as a second body.

Budget is gonna be around the £400 mark I think for the 40D body only.

Looking to buy 2nd hand from here as suggested but need to get shut of the 400D 1st!

Thanks for the replies everyone, know what people are saying about upgrading the glass but if I upgrade the body now I feel I will get the best out of any future lenses I purchase.

What about a 30d? Its a great quality camera

I'm in agreement with a lot here in that I think you need to invest in more glass. If all you've got / had is the kit lens then you really havnt given your 400D a fair chance in life!! You'll be amazed at the improvement decent lenses will have.

I cant see why a 40D would be better for wedding photography either, as I wouldnt have thought you want / need to crank up the ISO. I get some really good results at 1600 ISO with the 400D by just shooting on RAW then running it through Noise Ninja. You'd think it came from a camera 3 times the price.

Although the 40D is the better camera, as far as image quality goes you may find you're sat there at the end of the day trying to justify the expense as it wont make a massive difference to the final result.

Lenses will however...

Oh, and you will be able to use any lenses you buy for the 400D on the 40D (or 50D) when you do upgrade anyway, including EF-S.

the camera body is essentially the brain (it focusses opens pupils etc.) the eyes are the glass where you see everything, brilliant eyes means brilliant eyesight. a brilliant brain only means you smart.

I would say if you can afford it do it :), I went from a 400D[sold it for £200 to a mate] too a 40D and not looked back its so chunky and solid, extra FPS helped alot in sports [lots of kiteing pics] and the general feel and use of the cam feels better. I had to grip my 400D for it to be usable for my big hands the 40D is fine without the grip [even though i've gripped it as well hehe], although saying all that I already had my glass so its swings and roundabouts really lol.

Go for it dude :)
