Yes
Well, I'm new to the DSLR lark, but I'm already thinking ahead!

I was happy enough with the EF-S 18-55mm lens that came with my camera (before it broke  see other thread!).

However, thinking ahead to April, I'll be getting £1k for some web design work. Now, the immediate temptation is to go out and get a super-duper L glass lens, but in all honesty, that would be completely wasted on me, given that I'm completely new to the intricacies of DSLRs.

So, given that the kit lens will be good enough for general mucking around and scoping, I'm going to get a nifty-fifty for the portrait stuff that I need to do at work. However, I also want a good tele lens, as I loved capturing (or at least trying to!) animals, insects and flowers with my compact, and so a decent tele would let me do that at the next level.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a non-budget tele that would let me do this.. or am I just being stupid and should I get some L glass, a lens being for life and what not?

Have a look at one of the Canon 70-200 range of zooms all L quality and if you get the f4 without IS you can pick one up for under £400, a great lens IMO.

Cheers

I just bought a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM macro from jessops for £371 with 5% discount voucher jessops5 , you won't get better new for the money , they have 3 year warranty promotion on at the moment as well.

Okeydokey thanks chaps :) I'm nipping to Jessops afterwards so I'll have a goosey gander :)

what they both said :D

I picked up a mint 70-200 f4L for 350 and i dont have as much experience as some on here yet but having good glass has motivated me above and beyond to think about my shots and take as good a picture as possible in this horrible cold weather

As great as the 70-200s are (I also have one ;) ) I don't think they are really the best lens for wildlife, I think the OP would be much better with something like the 100-400L and possibly a Macro prime for the insects (maybe a Sigma 105mm).

My opinion is that if you can afford to go to L lenses go for it, as that is what you will end up wanting anyway, I bought a cheap tele lens which got replaced with an L series soom within 12 months...

If you go for the new model which is the 70-200 ƒ2.8 II APO EX DG MACRO you will get a 2x converter thrown in for the price of 649.00 the converter is worth over £100.

70-200 F4L.

I managed to pick one up for (After cashback) £290 brand new at the beginning of the year (It was made in February this year too, going by the date stamp). Best lens i've ever used.

Super sharp, and just really nice to use.

Hi all! Well, I went for the 70-200 f/4 L in the end! As luck would have it, I went to Jessops to pick up my camera (it's completely repaired now YAYAYAYY! :) ) but had a call from a friend who does the auctions just before going. Seems he had a mysterious 'white canon lens' that was included with a job lot and wondered if I was interested. Lo and behold it was the aforenamed lens; the world moves in mysterious ways... The strange thing was, I'd had a dream a few days ago that I had an L lens (it was the 50mm 1.2 in the dream though).. we live in a world of mysteries! If you don't want to spew, don't look how much I paid him for it:

£100:nuts:

I've not really had a chance to do anything with it yet, but I'm back in Wales now, so aim to get to the Welsh Mountain Zoo over the next few days and also the Snowdonia mission as well! Thanks for the hints though.. it would appear that positive suggests bring positive results!!

Highlight the black bit after 'spoiler', but make sure you're sat down......

That's just indecent! I'm properly green with envy now!

Heh, that's what my friend back up here said when I told him!

I'm sure it'll balance out in due course though.. I want to get a nifty fifty in the New Year, but the prices already seem to be going up, up and away. Having not had the money that I mentioned before, I only got the 70-200 just because it was such a stupidly good deal (and we got paid early for Christmas!), but by the time April arrives, Lord only knows how much those crafty little 50mms will be!

Damn.

*HATES*

hate you.

LOTS. (That's a rediculous price)

You lucky b****r :D

I almost hate myself! Especially when people save up so long for kit that they really need, and this is more of an expanding hobby for me which only infringes on work through convenience!!

Oh God, I just want to give it to the local orphanage now :'(

That is sick, I have now joined the queue of people who hate you.

Great to get a bargain.
