Yes
not quite the usual "what camera should I buy" thread - well almost

today: I have a 400D - very happy with it

tomorrow: I want a second body
why:
a) save keep changing lenses
b) plan is to have one for longer lenses - probably the 400D as it has "more pixels per duck"
c) plan is to have one for shorter (wide angle glass)

should I
i) get another 400D - at least I am familiar with that - and whichever body dies at the wrong moment - I know the other will step up easily
ii) get a 450D - latest of the line
iii) get a full frame - will make the wider glass "wider" - or at least put it back where it started
iv) should I start looking at 40D or 5D? - added bonus of being a step towards Canon's professional kit line-up
v) none of the above - should have thought of ..... (fill in the dots)

as for budget - none set, but I suspect 1D is probably "out of focus"

help, suggestions (well relevant ones), advice, cheques all very much appreciated

looking at the quality of glass you've been buying I'd say look upp he body range either a 40D or if you can afford it 5D. the 5D 400D combo would be ideal for a wide long combo as you've said my only concern would be you may like th handling of the 5D to much and end up wanting rid of the 400D.

Mike - one of the reasons I got a 30d and a 5d was that both are so similar in layout - it is such a good thing, but I do need to remember what lenses fit on what body.. Having 2 400d's would be a very good idea in many ways. HOWEVER.....
A 5d is so nice to use, and the results are so good, that I now want 2 5d's (except for the fact that I might be about to buy a 6x6 film camera to give that old-fashioned stuff a go - seems that slippers and a pipe will soon be joined by lightmeter round the neck and rolls of film in the trouser pockets - you pleased to see me or is that a roll of 120 in your pocket)
You have the lenses to do justice to a 5d, but another 400d would be so easy, if not wildly exciting a purchase..

I've got a similar dilema Mike.
I was thinking about getting a 40D, till the 450D was announced, and now I'm all confused
I'll follow this thread with interest :)

As you probabley remember I had a 400D then went for the 40D
The layout of the 40D is different enough to give me a few headaches
finding the right buttons to push or knobs to twist, instantly.
It would be easier I think to keep to the same model but having said that
I am glad I swapped.........and will have to try harder :bang: :D

er thanks
so you suggest I chop in the 400D and get a 40D and a 5D?!?:help:

having looked at the 5D (as you hinted) it does have a certain appeal - wahhhhhhhh

 If you must :D
Not quite what I was saying though, just that having two different bodies with different "function switches" can be a bit confusing for awhile until you are famillier with both, especially if you are in a hurry, to switch lenses (bodies)

Don't forget the 30d!

yeah, thanks for that
seriously what's the difference between 30D and 40D?
(small words please!)

30D - 40D

Upgrades:

Auto ISO function
3x custom function settings on the control dial
DIGIC III
liveview
bigger LCD (same pixel count I think though)
faster frame rate
faster write buffer
tweaked AF system

aha so if 40D in budgetary range (hope she's not reading this), I can cross 30D off the list then!
phew - one less to consider!!!

I guess 5D is, in the same way, better than 4D

and 1D is just silly!

As I have said quite a lot, consider a 2nd hand 1Ds mk 1, a better build quality than the 5D and of course, full frame as is the 5D.

thanks everyone for your feedback, help and advice
I'm going to t'exhibition 24th Feb (work permitting)
I think I can keep the wallet (and lustful feelings) under control until then
but if there is a bargain to be had there, I'll be very susceptible to it
once I know what I'm doing (don't hold your breath on that one!) I'll report back!

I'll go along with Steve....30D and a 5D and ditch to 400.
Two bodies with the same controls but very different uses....one reasonably fast for action and one superb for composed shots (and FF).

The control commonality means you spend less time thinking and more time composing.

Bob

I have a nasty feeling you're right
(be still my aching wallet!)
