Morning all,

Not sure if anybody else has experienced this with their Canon 400D or not...

Quite often it freezes, I've noticed it does this most often when i change lenses. I'll be using the camera, then switch it off, then swap the lenses over and when I go to switch it back on again...nothing! I then remove the battery and reinsert and switch back on and usually this works.

It doesn't do it all the time but I have noticed it does it randomly for no apprent reason sometimes, I then remove the battery etc to get it working.

Camera is 18 months old, owned by me from new and has done it since day 1.

Any body else had similar experiences?

Cheers

Rob

Always keep battery full, so it's not that!

Ive had/got the same problem I have done the same things that you do not done it for a while ***

There are two small micro-switches on the 400D, one under the battery compartment door and one behind the CF card door. It's possible that, in replacing your lens, you're gripping the camera differently and exerting some pressure that breaks the contact on either of these.
It might be worth "pretending" to change a lens (ie, going through the motions of holding the body the way you would) but not actually releasing the lens.....does the same thing happen?

The classic reason is a low battery but you seem to have dispelled that one.

Mine used to do this when the battery was very low, it would freeze with the bluetooth and CF light illuminated, sometimes with the mirror locked open and I'd have to remove the battery to cure it and drop the mirror - but this only happened with the Canon battery that came with the camera!!!

Its misleading too, as although the battery was very low, it would still show almost half full on the display, even though it wasnt (as I tested it). Swapped to a new canon battery and its stopped doing it!

I think the batteries Canon give away with the cameras are, dare I say, not quite as good as the ones they sell on the shelves!

But, if its not the battery I would suggest its the micro switches as per Bobs reply above, but it does sound like classic battery exhaustion?

I had a similar problem once with my 400D. It would freeze for no apparent reason, usually in the middle of a shoot.

It turned out to be a dodgy memory card

Try carefully giving the contacts on the body and the lens a gentle wipe.
There's no science in this but when it's happenned to me I've cured it by this means.

As odd jim states mine also showed battery half full How do I test to see if battery is faulty?

This happened to me a couple of weeks back. I was puzzled as the camera just wouldn't take the picture. Eventually after taking the battery out and back in it worked fine.

I'll keep an eye on this thread for more info...

A friend of mine placed it in some kind of voltage reader, it just came up with next to zero reading when the camera still read half full.

The new battery is ok though (still Canon) and the camera correctly reads the power levels, warning me when the battery is low which the one that came with the camera never did. Its strange, but I personally think its totally down to Canon putting substandard batteries in the cameras when you buy them.

I use a UK based company for compatible batteries. They're really cheap and the quality is exceptional. I have bought batteries for both my 400D & my 40D and have had no problems at all, I think I paid around £11 inc each
