GUys, can anyone tell me if the focus points in the viewfinder of the 400D are supposed to light up indicating the point that is locked?? Im sure it is supposed to.. mine dont!!

the active focus point(s) will flash red when you 1/2 depress the shutter button
the green blob (sorry if this is getting too technical) at the right end of the viewfinder will go solid if focus is acquired
if focus is not acquired, the green blob will flash
blob facility only available while the button is depressed btw

hth

Lol, i think i follow you!! :bonk:

I was sure they were supposed to light up, i dont know why but mine arnt.. is there an option in the Custom menu that stops it?? i havent seen one.. Must be broken!!

Thanks mmcp42 :bang:

it also depends on what AF mode you are in. you dont get a lock with AI Servo mode.

you don't get the red flash, but the green blob still does its stuff
in fact if the focus changes, the green blob kicks in each time

(got to hold the button down of course!)

Yep, i got it, they dont even light up in Auto!! (Green Square :naughty:)

Looks like a trip to a service center.. :bang:

you havnt got it set to manual focus have you by any chance

Iv tried it on all settings.. it tried it on all different focal point settings.. still nothing..

I havent tried banging it yet..

:naughty: Oh no!! i think i might need a new camera!! :naughty::naughty:

Daft question probably, you don't have the lens set to MF do you?

I had the same problem a while ago, a full factory reset cured it.

:whistling:
I wouldnt be looking for excuses!! But it IS a good one!!!

And its NOT set to MF.. i only wish it were just a simple thing like that.. is there any more simple things it could be?? id rather it be me being daft the it being broken!!

Ahh, ok, i'll have a go.. how do u do it?? i can only see the CLEAR SETTINGS..

I think it's something like take the battery out and leave it for slightly longer than you think it needs
30 minutes as I recall

(oops if only I could read!: you might also try "Clear Settings" on the last setup page (spanner2!))

Iv done the clear settings.. TWICE now!! lol..

I'll take the battery out for an hour and see what happends.. thanks..

Isnt there a custom function that says something about display points in autocus.... enable or disable?

I cant look as I am at work...but check that if you can.

Thanks Janice, but no there isnt.. not that i can see anyway..

try deleting all the custom settings

Done it.. still nothing..

I think its broke..

What happens when you manually pick a focus point - do you see them light up as you scroll through them all?

What mode are you in? "Sports", for example, enables AI Focus so you won't get the red markers OR confirmation beep.

they light up on the screen when i select them, but not in the viewfinder.. a while ago i left my camera bag in the car over night and took it out the next morning and it steamed up very badly!! i wonder if this could have a barring on it! im not sure when they stopped working! its been a while though..

No it doesn't!! so i WILL need a new camera then!!

Sounds like it needs a trip to Canon :(

yes, but im not going to tell the wife that!! its dead.. thats all.. hehe.. Now, wheres that ebay page i bookmarked?? :naughty:

if it's dead I'll give you a fiver for it! :)

LOL.. it works just fine, its just in low light its hard to see the focus point..

Nice try tho..

Iv seen for sale a 5D with a 28-70 2.8L and grip for £1400, do you think its a good price?? Second hand ovvi...

It says the active point should light up even when using manual focusing.......but my 40d doesnt either. I have often wondered why it doesnt.

I checked last night and it lights in autofocus when in the basic zones... portrait, landscape etc etc... but not AV, TV, Manual.

Aparently the book says that in servo and AI focus.. it wont light and neither does the green focus acheived blob light up.

Janice, my 40D lights up in every mode including MF but there is a CF to turn it off, have you checked that? CFIII-4 is the one..

I have also found that now i have updated the firmware... the zoom out function to see an image on the lcd.. just turns the picture OFF. It zooms in ok... then when I press the zoom out button it turns off but has only done so yesterday..... can I go back to the previous firmware?

The red light part is now working after I cleared all settings... but the zoom out still isnt. not important really but a bit of a bind... anyone else upgraded firmware and found this?

I cant speak for the 40D as iv no experience of one, but iv found with my 400 that if i select the focus points individualy i can see a very faint glow of red from one or two.. deffo a fault..
