Difference between shots 3 and 4 is interesting.

Am I the only person to have a Reader Account full of lighting blogs....?

BTW for extra credit, guess how many pics Luis Alvarez added to his portfolio in 2010. (He's a stock photographer - answer's on his blog and may surprise you...)

You guys know you can rent stuff, right?

Profoto ring flash 2 is £1,360. Or £30 a day.

not the only one at all :)
just added this one though ;)

nice stuff...

and yes Barry, at least in london, kit's *not* expensive to hire in the grand scheme :)

Normal ring flashes aren't that expensive! Even a wireless metz one is only £300 quid. Got an old vivitar one I got for £70 quid new too many years ago so I just need the rest of the studio gear and I'm sorted :D

Have a look at a Profoto ringflash, they are very different from a metz ringflash. Very very different :)

They're enormous by the looks of them!

Would be interesting to see how much of a similar effect you could get with other cheaper gear though.

The likes of metz and marumi etc are for shooting macro. You can get speedlight adapters like a ray flash or an orbis, some people have success using these in a similar way to a proper ringflash, but when it comes down to it, you can't beat a proper pack powered ringflash for fashion etc.

Rankin was famous for using wide angle lenses and ringflashes on his model photography in his earlier days I believe.

£30 a day? are you serious?

Yes. Of course. http://www.procentre.co.uk/Rental/profoto_flash.html

Indeed ;)

That is if you have a rental place near by :P otherwise count in travel expenses and those £30 are for just the ring flash or pack as well?

30 for the flash. Couple of Pro-7a packs will run 4 lights and cost you another 60 - 100 depending on power.

But it's often cheaper to travel to where the kit is. For a client shoot I'll often rent a studio in London and travel there - then we have access to models, stylists, lights etc. IIRC Pro Centre do free delivery inside M25 if you rent enough kit.

hmm that sounds good, will have to remember it if I ever need something like that. :)

but for now Ill stick to my quadra and hope the new eco ring flash will be good.
