3rd party batteries

I'm after replacing the battery for my D3 and the proper Nikon battery is north of 80 beans, but I am seeing lots of cheaper 3rd party ones out there......... does anyone know if they're any good?...... or should I stop being tight and just fork out on a proper one?

.... it'd be a shame to pay twice the amount for something for no good reason.

I have 3rd party decoded batteries for my d5100 and they work fine.
 
Thanks Gr8shot, do you find they last as long or do they ever not show charge when you know full well they have been fully charged etc?
 
Right, I've worked in the trade for many years. I didn't need another battery but had some funds in PayPal so I stupidly ordered a third party battery off eBay. I could have bought one from the shop I worked at and got a hefty staff discount. The battery looked cheap and I was expecting problems. I charged it and used it for a few weeks. I noticed it was getting seriously hot when charging. I contacted the seller about my worries. They said why am I buying a third party battery for a d3s??? I should be using a Nikon own with that type of camera!! Mmmmm needless to say they stopped comms and I haven't used it since.

Buy a Nikon battery. Yes they are expensive but do is your camera!!!

They last every bit as long don't get drawn into the debate of
How can you put cheap batteries in your expensive camera crap. There's a strong divide on here.
But loads of users on here, me included have had no issues with them, get them off amazon rather than flea bay so you can return easy if there's a problem
 
Got mine for my D3 from 7 day shop for around £17 delivered never had a problem with them and without looking I can not tell if I have third party or genuine in the camera. Same with the 6 battery's I had for the D700.
 
this comes up quite a lot, theres tonnes of threads on it. general consensus is that most that use them have no issues.

7dayshop are the ones a lot use, but theyre currently having delivery issues with batteries now royal mail have changed their policy on shipping li-on.
 
I got one from Amazon for the D3 which cost about £20 and it's worked perfectly. :)
 
I've owned a 30D, 50D, 7D & 5D mk2 and never bought an OE battery for any of them and never had any problems. The third party ones don't seem to last quite as long between charges as the OE ones but the only one that's ever died completely on me was a Canon one which stopped holding the charge (it was quite old though).
 
I have a Canon 5D3 and a 7D and the wife has a 650D. Between us we have around 20 batteries for them (LP-E6 and LP-E8) and out of them only 2 of them are original Canons. I have been using the batteries for around 2 years for some and around a year for the rest and have had NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER with any of them. They charge in similar time to the originals and last at least as long as the originals too.

I have 3rd party grips fitted to all the bodies above and I have tried the batteries both in the grip and straight in the camera body as well. All report correctly at all times and I have no reservations in reccommending them to anyone. I have bought all the batteries off ebay and have paid a maximum of £10 for the LP-E6 and usually between £5-£6 for the LP-E8's.
 
I'm in the battery business albeit for laptops, not cameras. Not all 3rd party batteries are cheap and nasty. Use your common sense. If it looks to good to be true, it probably is. Buy from a reputable company and avoid places like eBay. Even the like of Amazon and play a have some pretty dodgy goods sold by third parties.
 
I bought 2 7 day shop ones for my 7D
they are great and last just as long as the canon one:)
 
I have an energizer one for my d300s that I also used to use in my d90 and couldnt really tell any difference.
 
bought one for my 5D3 for (shocking price of £6.63) ... and i got 2 months warranty!!!!!!!! ..... it works faultlessly its a back-up to genuine one thats all.

just cant se the point in paying £50 for a canon one! ... everyone to their own i supose :-)
 
I bought a 2nd canon battery off amazon for about £40 for my 40d years ago, and it was rubbish (clearly a fake). so I bought some hahnel batteries from a decent mail order camera shop for about £20 each - they were fantastic (better than original battery for charge life).

buy from eBay or amazon market at your risk, cos it's pretty easy for them to be selling cheap batteries with fake labels.

the problem is you would have to prove it was a fake. I would be surprised if anyone would try to fake a hahnel, or if a bona fide shop would sell fake gear
