Does you flash have a built in WA diffuser? My MZ54 does, it only widens it to 20mm so there won't be no vignette but it would reduce it.

A stofen type diffuse will help to widen it as you'll get a bare bulb effect (without bouncing) but so would a piece of tupperware from asda slotted over the top.

Go to strobist.com and search for bare bulb to see what I'm on about.
 
But if the lens itself is in the way of the light, surely it doesn't matter how much it is diffused, a shadow will still be cast.
 
No its not the lens thats in the way, its the minimum zoom of the flash being 28mm (20mm with built in diffuser to asnwer kevs question), but the maximum zoom of the fisheye being 17mm; so there is an area where the flash wont light the picture. maybe i wasnt too clear explaining it.

I see the canon 430ex has a built in diffuser to allow a 14mm zoom, which is a plus; but i may also try the stofen flash diffuser. I assume this is ok for outdoor/sport photography?
 
you really need the wide angle diffuser than the stofen diffuser which softens the light. The WA Diffuser speads the light abit more.
 
A fish-eye lens has a 180º FoV. So you would need a diffusor that spreads the light equally over a 180º angle. That would require the flashgun to also have a sensor that covers 180º! Even if you could solve those 2 problems, you would then face another problem: your flashgun's range will be cut to a fraction!

ive looked at the 430ex again and it has a built in wa diffuser that will work for a 14mm focal length on a fullframe sensor. but as i have a 400d, would the 1.6 crop factor crop most of the vignette? or am i thinking in the wrong way?
 
Your 1.6 crop makes the effective field of view of your lens 16-27, the 14mm diffuser should work OK. I use flash with a 16-35 on a 5D all the time and the WA diffuser in my flash works well.
 
Surely you just need to bounce the flash off the ceiling or a wall :shrug:

Try a couple of wireless flashes then maybe?

no worries :) only found it after looking into fisheyes myself this week. I've just spent a big wedge on a 180mm, so unfortunately don't think i can stretch to the 10.5mm nikon, but might go for a mf Peleng 8mm!!
