what is this?

I keep seeing it lately on threads and it's annoying.

Why are people just typing ....?

It's not people editing their post from what they originally said as there is no edit remark at the bottom. It seems people are just replying to a thread with some dots.

What gives?

P.s. I think i'll be the first to do it to this thread just to get it out of the way, as no doubt someone will be hilarious and do it - may as well be me

I believe it means:

...

:D :D :D

OK the technical bit.

It's a precomposed ellipsis, "a series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word, sentence or whole section from the original text being quoted. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence"

Wikipedia. (2012). Ellipsis. Available: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis. Last accessed 12 March 2012.

Morse code?

.... .. ...... . ...... ....... .. .. Dot to Dot  Have you been to see anybody lately about this Joe? If a few dots were to annoy me I would be extremely concerned about it

Crikey that means just about everything I type / write could be made so much easier:

Dear ****

I have only ever seen it as edits, if people don't leave a reason I am not sure you will see it is an edit, I think as a mod I do.

it can make sense when people use it in a sentence, but why are people doing it as a thread reply?

why not just not post anything? It has the same effect. It comes across like people are feeling self important like anybody cares that they are deliberately ommiting their own post.

As a yung un I would av been decoding this but now I've matured ( well ok perhaps not:D), I can't be ar**d ......still curious what it means though.....

i have seen it as edits, and i can understand that, perhaps afterwards someone decides that they wish they hadn't said something. Thats fair enough.

But I have been seeing it as just a reply - thats annoying me! :bang::bang:

Perhaps they are saying something without actually typing it out.
Maybe they feel that their view will cause agrevation and result in a barrage of negative feedback so by putting ..... is a way of showing they have an opinion without actually voicing it.
Is it not a little like when someone ( myself included) put something like " sits back with a cuppa and jaffas" ...in other words interested in the outcome of the thread without actually becoming deeply involved in it.

i don't get that. If you have an opinion but you don't want to voice it - why do you want other people to know you have an opinion but don't want to voice it? Isn't that a bit self indulgent?

I do it just to wind you up...

Would it not be more fun to do it physically with a key?!! :D :D ( OK Joe I admit I have a wierd sense of humour but what the h*ll it's called fun!)

Take a look at this thread...

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=386623&page=2

you will see I used the "sit back with a cuppa" posting as a way to ease the agrevation in the thread and attempt at making it humurous which actually worked to a point....I have seen similar done on odd occasions by other members.

but that can work like you said and ease the tention, it causes a bit of conversation between people.

posting .... doesn't lighten the mood or anything. I tell you what it reminds me of - when i was at shcool I had this friend who always used to wait for me to ask him something before he would tell me. It used to infuriate me.

He'd be like "I watched this really good film last night"

and I'd say "ah right" and wait for him to tell me about it. and he'd just sit there in silence until I said "So, what was the film" :bang::bang:

used to drive me insane. It's like he always wanted people to know he was thinking something but wouldn't reveal it until someone asked him.

Look at the dots, not around the dots - look into the dots, Joe.

They blink, they smile, they laugh. The dots are mocking you, Joe....

Dot... dot... dot...

erm, I try and avoid that kind of night club, but ok if you say so. ..Im in! :D

hmmm, i dont know that I have ever seen you do it! but i will be on the lookout now!

:D Well if you start stalking me for that Im going to have to retaliate by pointing out you complete lacking in the use of capital letters and pointless over use of exclamation marks!

...or as it goes I shant be bovered but the idea stands right. :D

it could still be an edit. if you edit your post immediately after posting then it doesn't always show as an edit. Presumably there is some time allowance before an edit is flagged as such. I've done this several times to correct spelling mistakes :)

this line was added as an edit

the time edit is one minute i think.

It could be, but i've seen it more often than not from the same people, so i think it's not that.

You can actually post a reply, submit it and then open and edit it without it being shown as edited. You can't remove it as a post however.

So if someone realises what they have just said is tosh they can remove it but not the oridinal post.

See - it's what the above post says as I've only just noticed it - I could have just removed all of this guff and left some dots to further annoy Joe.

Joe, have you been drinking Stella lately as you really seem to be Mr Angry at the moment:naughty:

Blargh

I'd rather poke myself in the eye than drink stella!

My son keeps waking me up at exactly 6.05am at the moment singing. It's making me feel angry a lot!

I've always read it as meaning the equivalent of a tumble weed or saying "what's your point?"

Get it off your chest Joe....we're all here with laerge listening ears :exit:
