Hi,

I'm a Sony A7 user and have use 16-35mm lens.

I want another, smaller, faster lens for more 'general use' - today I found a Currys with the FE 50mm 1.8 for £179.99 which is a decent price, however I am still put off buying what is effectively a 'nifty fifty' for double the price of other brands.

I am considering a 35mm (either a Samyang 35mm 2.8 (£279.99) or Sony Zeiss 2.8 (£430+) - as these are smaller, faster, sharper and lighter than my 16-35mm at 35mm.

My question is essentially - should I go with the 50mm for the extra reach or is the 35mm better for general use/walkabout?

Cheers,

Tom

You have 35mm f4 on your current lens which is fine for shooting 'walkabout'.
Get the fe 50 1.8.

I also have the 16-35mm which is great as a walkabout where space is limited (or if you want to capture atmospheric portraits), I added the 55mm f1.8 to get a bit closer or achieve that lively background bokeh

It’s not whether which is a better lens but which focal length you like to shoot more.

Exactly.

Do you like 35mm? or do you prefer 50mm?

That should answer your question for you.

Me, I really don't get on with 35mm and prefer 50mm, lots of people are exactly the opposite.

Yep this! I have tried 35mm lots of times but always return to my 50mm! Just like the focal length!

I'd get the 50, since as pointed out, you have 35 already covered. FWIW that's about the same price as a Nikon 50 AFG 1.8.

Nikon 50mm f1.8g is £189.99 from currys.

I would like to enjoy 35mm, it seems very verstile, but like my 50!

Having a 35 and 50 might be a bit too close, as always handy to have something wider when using a 50 for those just in case moments and 35 isn't that wide? Although I am never a wide angle shooter TBH.
