Hello,

A few questions about getting slide film developed.

1/ do common shops like jessops/snappy snaps do next day slide film processing?

2/ Does it cost same as C41 developing? Asda do developing for £2 for c41 stuff.

I really want to try some but if its going to be too much hassle or wait then I'll not bother.

1/ Stores like these are likely to send films away to be processed. Jessops used to have an approx return time of 3 days.

2/ I wouldn't think so. Probably a lot more expensive.

If you feel confident, it isn't all that difficult to process your own slide film. I've done it once albeit with an experienced mate that processed all his own stuff. Probably a bit more difficult to get your hands on kits nowadays.

I don't think the high street does E6 anymore.
I get all my E6/C41 done at a lab anyway, whatever format it is.
The cheapest E6 is usually online, but obviously you have to faff with postage and waiting.

I do BnW E6 myself and am looking at grabbing some colour chems as in theory its no harder

(and BnW is v straightforward)

Hmm thanks for that, I thought there would be someone in London but guess not :(

You're joking ??

I live in Yorkshire, we have one lab in the entire county.
I thought there are tons more than that in the smoke, one of the southern jesses will be by soon with a list I'm sure...:D

C41 and E6 are developed at a higher temperature, you need some way to keep all the chemical steps at the same 38 degrees, you can do that with a big bowl of hot water with everything floating in it, its not that difficult..:)

Yeah but £10+ a roll for developing is a bit too much for me.

Home developing is out of the question as well unforunately :(

The Darkroom UK charges £4.50 a roll or £6 mounted.

Hmm, my lab is £5 for 120, I thought that was expensive, but worth it.
220 is £6 a roll, its time it made a come back..

Doing E6 yourself is easy - a 12-roll kit will set you back about £25 and you don't need any more than a dev tank, thermometer and some spirals.

joxby - I thought you did your own... I'm shocked! :)

I've used my wotsit tank a few times, but err indoors smashed it with the ban stick till my darkroom is built.
B/W processing is still available in the kitchen, if booked 3 months in advance..:cuckoo:

ya know the solution there :naughty:

I use Metro Imaging which is £7.80 for 36exp 35mm (unmounted). I know I could get it cheaper if I sent it off but they turn it round in 2 hrs and I'm impatient ;)

Doesn't that get very expensive?

I mean I'd shoot maybe 3-4 rolls on a meet/event happening around london.

Thats easily £30-£40 which I don't think I could afford on a student budget. Might have to stick to BW for a while yet.

You shoot 150 b/w film frames at an event/meet...??

Yeah, not for a student budget. I think it's fine if you only shoot the occasional roll, like me :)

If anyone is looking to do some E6 slide film developing, the cheapest I've seen a 5-litre kit is here (£48.44 or £55.94 incl delivery)

I've just returned from a trip to France where I took my rangefinder on a rare outing (and accidentally and very clumsily opened the back. OUCH!). I Googled "35mm slide developing London" and found in addition to Metro Imaging bayeux.co.uk and their prices seem reasonably low (but no turn around time I could see, but I expect it to be fast). Much better than fotostation.co.uk - 36 exposures £25.99 in 5 days. Do they walk the films to some God-forsaken backwater?

How I miss the heyday of film and Joe's Basement ....

Welcome gwailo54....:D

Well, I just got back from Leeds after a fruitless search for B/W developer:annoyed:

Jessops usually have Ilfosol but they're going to the dogs these days, however I thought I'd call in Snappy Snaps as a wild card, sure enough they had b****r all too, but...(and I'm sure its been mentioned before somewhere) they do 1 hour c41 and e6 35mm and M/F.
Finding anywhere high street that does 35mm e6 never mind 120, is tough.
There are 60 or 70 snappy snap stores in and around London, Leeds has got....err.......1

joxby,

Thanks for the welcome. Jessops are going to the dogs? You are generous. I gave up on them years ago.

Snappy Snaps used to do same day slides at an acceptable price but that is now a thing of the past. As digital is here to stay, the Epson RD1S and Leica M9 would suit me to a T. The Leica is full frame after all (anybody want to get rid of Leica lenses at knock down prices?), but the Epson inside the Bessa body and the cute retention of the film advance lever makes it more desirable! I am a romantic at heart.

Oh they've been going to the dogs for years but whilst ever they kept an emergency stock of walk in walk out film and developer, they could do no wrong in my eyes.....they've bust that bubble now :(

The epson and leica are fine cameras, unfortunately, you can't put film in them, which sounds daring and innovative, but is in fact...a drag...

I hear you loud and clear. I love my relatively modern Bessa R4A. Scala is still wonderful. It's a shame I have never been consistently good in B&W. I had a bash at it in France the last two weeks. I need to get it developed - no room at the residence for home brewing. :'(

The best walk-in source I've come across recently is Jacobs.
