35mm or 50mm?

I have the 35mm f1.8 and it is a superb lens. I use it for low-light indoor photos of my kids, mostly. Here are some samples:

Never used it for buildings though....

To be honest,at the moment both the lens you are talking about are covered by your zoom range,to me unless you need a low light lens, both having the faster aperture of F1.8.

If it were me I would work with this lens for a while, and save for an 17-55mm F2.8 or if you need longer range 16-85mm.

:)
thats what I thought, no need to have separate prime lenses
Not familiar with Nikon lenses but your kit lens is probabaly excellent
in my case I went for the tamron 17-50 F2.8:)

Wow, I go away for a few days & look what happens!!!

Baring in mind my D5100 was outside of my 'permitted' budget (married!!) I will not be upgrading it.
I took the advice about trying 35mm & 50mm on my kit lens & would probably choose 35mm. Notice I said 'probably' as I think I'll stick with the latter advice & stick with my more than adequate kit lens. I don't want to be carrying too much so why not stick with that lens??!

Besides if the exchange rate improves I might find a bargain whilst I'm in New York!!

'let's get them off auto first' was very relevant. It'll come, think I'll practice more before I worry about lenses.

Very wise.

Very wise. The understanding will come with practice, one day you'll find it'll all just click into place in your head and you'll start to feel a lot more confident.
