35mm or 50mm Nikon

Be weary of the 50mm AFd...everyone bangs on about it but it is very soft wide open until f2.8 where it is exceptionally good, best at f4.

The 35mm DX is sharp even wide open.

If you do prefer the 50mm length, the afs is much better optically and is actually sharp at f1.8
 
I have both and tend to use the 35mm more on my D90, additionally I have just bought the 85mm 1.8G which I am delighted with and my 50mm is being squeezed out in the middle TBH. Can feel a trip to the For Sale forums coming up...
The 35 is a great indoor lens for my toddler and does decent landscapes too!
 
I have both the Nikon 35mm f1.8 and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC.
On a D7000 body,the Nikon is loads better wide open (IMO) than the Tamron but once you step the Tamron down a little it is very good for the money!
My concern with the Tammy is it seems to Vignette wide open at 50mm,ie when shooting portraits,but it could be me!
I wonder if my vignetting issues may be down to the UV filter!
The vignetting does'nt bother me as most of my portraits are BW and i sometimes add a vignette in pp anyway and if you close the aperture down a couple of stops it's gone!
The Tammy is a very good lens an the one i use most as having the zoom makes it very versatile!
I've used it for landscapes at 17mm and have been very impressed.

A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens no matter what body you put it on. That will never change.
The field of view is different between a DX body and a FX body, but the lens is still the same focal length regardless.

What about a nice zoom? Any recommendations?
 
I notice there is also a 35mm 1.8G

Is this an older one? I know the AFS has a motor in it?

That's the new one, well the only one, there is no other 35mm f/1.8.
 
I have the 50mm on mine (although its the 1.4, not the 1.8). Its a great focal length for head shots but as others have mentioned it can be restrictive inside. All depends on what you are planning on shooting.
 
I sometimes find even the 35mm restrictive inside (in small rooms with moving kids) which is why I also have the Tamron 17-50 2.8.

I think so, I have the Non-VC version. And in a way, its sort of made my 35mm a little redundant. :(
 
Both perform the same, get whichever FL you prefer to use.

However I note that comparing 50mm AFN and 35mm DX, you don't get manual over ride all the time one the 50mm, but you don't get distance scale and IR marks on the 35mm

They are both the same size and both have 52mm filter thread.

The 35mm focusing is much quieter than the 50mm.

You havent, it doesnt exsit.

The 35mm f/1.8G was released in 2009 and was the first nikon lens in this focal length with that aperture.
There was a 35mm f/2 before that in AF-D mount.
 
If it helps, I have the 35mm F1.8G and the 50mm F1.4D and the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 non VC.

All the lenses are sharp - but I would say the 50mm F1.4D is the definitely the sharpest out the lot.

Which one to buy? That can only depend on what you shoot. I owned the 50mm first, my shooting style change and I purchased the 35mm. I sometimes shoot in very tight spaces, and the 35mm is ideal for this , out and about I break out the 50mm - great for bokeh.

Which ever one of the 3 you buy - you wont be disappointed.

edit - noticed the OP talking about 50mm F1.8 - did own that version as well briefly, but did not keep it due to already having the F1.4 - was a good lens - at a good price. Available around £75 - so worth adding to your camera bag.
