Hi there.

I've had my Canon 350D body for about 3 years now and think it's time for an upgrade. Not to say that I consider myself anywhere near an expert but I feel I've outgrown the 350D. I've had offers from people to shoot events for them (including weddings!) but I don't feel that I can accept the work and turn up with an entry level SLR.

I think it's time I invested in a faster, heavier body. My initial thoughts were the 40D. It seems a logical step up from the 350D but the purpose of this thread is to get ideas from other people about possible upgrades.

I want to stick with Canon. Price wise, I was thinking something along the lines of the price of a second hand 40D body.

Thanks

The 40D is a much nicer handling camera and will in certain areas give better results too due to high ISO performance, faster AF and more FPS when shooting continuous.

If you are thinking of covering events then I would ensure you have a few things covered. Firstly the skill to be able to shoot the event when working to time limits, under pressure, varying light conditions, whatever it might be.

Next, you will want a backup of everything so if something goes wrong you can keep shooting. This would be 2 bodies, to of each focal lenght lens you use to get the desired results, 2 flash guns (if you shoot with flash) etc etc. Nothing worse than being paid for a job then not deliverying due to kit going wrong. I've only had it happen once and just picked up the backup and kept shooting.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks Mark, advice is appreciated :)

The events I've been asked to cover have been more as a favour rather than a paid job. In that respect I wouldn't be expected to give professional results. Indeed if I were to sell myself as an event photographer then I would look at doubling up on my equipment and honing my skills as you say.
