My gorgeous little nanna died yesterday and none of us can believe it. :shake: :bang:

My grandad died when I was young, so my uncle had been her carer. We are trying to sort out funeral arrangements and was wondering does the government give a grant towards funeral costs? We want to give her a great send off and are wanting a proper headstone too.

No need to worry about the headstone at present, as they normally cannot be erected for several months following internment so there will be time to think about suitable wording, etc.

But it all depends on the estate of the deceased, and who accepts responsibility for paying for the funeral, and the reason why they assume reponsibility.

It's really there to cover the costs of a basic funeral.

My gran died suddenly in March (she was 90, but otherwise healthy). When we went to the funeral directors they didn't mention any kind of grants / funds available to help pay towards the cost of the funeral.

I think the closest to anything like that would be a payment plan to spread the cost. It may be worth speaking to the funeral directors about what they can offer.

Sorry to hear about your nanna. Some people pre pay for their funerals. My gran did. Logical thing to do is to pay for it out of the estate itself or at least use any funds knocking around first before any other source. That's after checking any insurance/pension policies in case they pay out a sum on death.

Really sorry to hear about your loss.
We lost members of our family recently too and from what i recall i believe there is a grant available but not sure if it is means tested or not. It was mentioned by the funeral director and i think that might be a good person for you to ask too. They would probably know about all the assistance that is available to help the bereaved.

It's my Dads funeral today. In Scotland you can apply for money from the social fund to help pay towards the funeral.

Gutted for you, I lost my Granddad in November and the stone still isn't on where we put his ashes. The cold winter did prevent us putting him in the ground for a while but its probably 3 months now.

As for funding the best people to speak to are the funeral directors they know everything there is to know about it. My granddad did a prepay a few years ago so we just had a few extras my Mum wanted to pay for.

When it comes to buying things like flowers and the stone if you want to save money go direct to the florist and stone mason the funeral directors as nice as they are, make a lot of money on the extras even the entry in the local paper so contact the paper direct, when the funeral place does it half will be an advert for them anyway with "donations sent to XYZ funeral directors etc"

I know its easy to let them do it all but I think the bill for just 1 lot of flowers on the box and the message in the paper came to somthing like £190.
