32bit win 7 upgrade to 64bit win 8

Hey guys
I bought my laptop when vista was upgraded to windows 7 so i bought a vista laptop with free upgrade disk, only catch was my laptop has 4gb of memory and the upgrade disk was only the 32bit os.
The os is only acknowledging 3gb of memory so been wanting to go to a 64bit os for a while now but dont want to downgrad back to vista.

Windows 8 upgrade disks seem to be had for £45, will the box contain the disk for both 32 and 64 os? Will it install the 32 as default as the system its upgrading is 32bit?
I was thinking of starting as a clean install anyway so would i need to clean install vista as that was 64bit and then put win 8 on top or could or do it on top of a win7 32 bit os? Thanks in advance, Ben.

Will the win 8 upgrade contain both 32 and 64bit disks?

You still can't

It will have to be a clean install of 64bit windows 7, then upgrade to 64bit 8

Or a clean install of 64bit windows 8

So can i put a clean install of windows 8 64bit with the upgrade disk with my system currently being windows 7 32bit?

No, you need to wipe the 32bit version of 7 and install the 64bit version of 7, then install the upgrade of 64bit 8.

Or if you have a full copy of windows 8 64bit not the upgrade, you will need to do a clean install, wipe the disk.

Thats going to be the problem then as the laptop came with vista preinstalled but i got a 32bit windows 7 upgrade disk with it but for some strange reason not a 64bit with it. I'll have to look if the vista was 64bit i'd presume it was seeing as the laptop came with 4gb of memory.
All this just so can i upgrade to 16gb in the hope it will make ps work flow a little better.

Yeah I'm not really keen on changing to windows 8 to be honest but i need a 64bit os and its cheaper than me buying a windows 7 disk i'd heard that it can be run without the metro interface but still didn't really want to change.

If any one has another option to get a windows 7 64 bit os disk then id be very great full

8 can't be run without metro. There are hacks at the moment but ms are reportedly blocking them.
 
Sounds like i need a cheap way of getting windows 7 64bit then....

Is that the full os? Im thinking of building a monster spec pc in a few months is the key limited to one system or would i be able to install it on the new pc too? Id presume its limited to one pc isn't it?
Also do you think i'll notice a decent difference basically going from 3gb of useable ram to 16gb in ps? I know it depends on a lot of other factors but ram seems to be a big one with ps.

Full OS.

Technically it's tied to a motherboard but ms seem to let it slide with activation. I think they'd just prefer it wasn't pirated..

Hell yes you'd notice going from 3 to 16.

Ah i get you I've had similar in the past with xp i think it was. It let me install it on another system it just said the product key was invalid but it still let me run the os but just not apply updates direct from ms do you think it would be the same with this?
 
After a better look into it my motherboard will only cope with 8gb max of ram so i'd be limited at that, does it still seem a worthy upgrade to you?

Theres also the option of a ssd but seeing as my laptop only has one hdd slot i'd have to use the ssd as my only hdd which I'm guessing isn't the best idea as they don't like to be constantly written on do they? Plus id have to go for a 256gb instead of the 500 i have now as they seem to get a bit silly priced after 256.

Have you had much experience with using a flash drive for ready boost? Are the gains that good? Maybe buy a 16gb flash pen for £10 and see how much difference that would make also?

Wrong I'm afraid. I have just formatted my C: drive and done a completely clean, ground up install of Windows 8 from the downloaded £25 upgrade of Windows 8 64bit. Just burn the downloaded files to a DVD and it will boot from it, and install as normal.

Wrong: I am using Start8 from Stardock. Works perfectly... have a screen shot...

It boots into Windows 8 straight to the desktop, and behaves exactly like Windows 7 did. You can even disable the hot corners too if they annoy you. The Metro interface is now an item in the start menu should I need it. MS are not blocking anything. I've even installed a 3rd party app to get my drives sidebar gadget working in Win8... no problems, despite MS removing sidebar gadget support from Windows 8.

Yes... but as you can see above.. they're not. It's a rumour. Can you provide a source for your information?
 
Well.. it works flawlessly here, regardless of what has been written.. dunno what to say :) There's are also loads of articles saying that you can't do a clean install of Windows 8 from the upgrade as well... but I've just done that too.

Don't believe everything you read :)

That's interesting, are you sure it was an upgrade version you used?

In the past, the upgrade versions of windows wouldn't install without a valid windows installation being present on the drive.

I have readyboost on my netbook, doesn't make that much difference and think you are limited to around 3 or 4 gig.
 
Thanks for the help guys, ive now got windows 7 64bit and 8gb of ram. Will be doing some ps work tonight so hopefully notice a decent difference.

By the sounds of it ready boost doesn't really make any difference on systems with 4gb+ of memory so don't think i'll bother.

I've seen a number of people on overclockers doing a clean install from the £25 upgrade version. MS have also changed how the oem version works, you can install on more than one system, it's not tied down. One reason why there is no retail version this time round.

The OS will only ever "recognise" 3.25GB with a 32bit OS anyway, (it actually recognises all of it, but some is reserved for other stuff, and it could actually be less depending on the configuration of the PC) is that what you're getting? - are you really going to go through all that for .75GB? If you're going to upgrade to 64bit, upgrade your PC to 8GB and get the most out of it.

Yes. I paid my £25 and downloaded the UPGRADE. Burned the files to DVD, booted from it, formatted the my drive from the install dialogue as normal and did a completely clean install.
