Hello everyone :) i join the TP about month ago cos i become interesting into photography :)

I looking to buy first SLR, been looking around forums and been in shops to look and feel the canon SLR. I down to two things i would go for is 30D and 450D, this morning i saw 30d for sale which is 15 miles away from me, right price and i cant afford to pay 40D so 30D is best for me. However, one of my family in manchester have text me say they sell 450D :gag: I been in shop and i like shape of 450D but its abit small for my huge hand (im 6ft :D) but its right price for me aswell. Im really stuck which one i would go for? Bear in mind, i never use SLR before. I would use camera for to walk around outside, night shots and family shoot at home etc :)

Amy informations would be really helpful :)

30D much better camera...

450D consumer
30D Semi Pro

:agree: it wouldnt take long to get used to the 30D, and its an awesome camera. However I have owned the 450D and it is also a capable camera. Like the OP I am over 6ft, huge hands and fingers, the 450D was a little fiddly!

30D vote from me

Not such a simple answer. The 30D has better quality body, more FPS and is more ergonomic but the 450D is lighter, has 12.2 rather than 8.1mp as well as live view and is a newer camera.

A comparison below to help you make up your mind, I would also read both reviews.
Also if you tell us what things you would like to photograph we could help you a bit better (i.e. flowers, birds, sports, landscapes, people etc.)

30D gets my vote.

Can you please elaborate why the 30D is better than the 450D for what the OP needs it for?:

to walk around outside (450D is lighter)
night shots (450D is better at higher ISO due to a newer processor sensor, 450D has the DigicIII and a newly designed sensor, 30D has the older DigicII)
family shoot at home (better menu and Live View so that more family members find it easier to use)

if he wanted it for sports photography or for rough use (in rain, mud etc.) I would suggest the 30D, but not in this case.

BTW I did own both cameras, did you?

I am sorry if I rant a bit, but when a member wants help in making an informed decision he needs more than a simple yes or no answer

Just to make myself clear I did prefer the 30D for birding (especially birds in flight) but I always used the 450D as a walkabout body.

Im not looking for simple yes or no but i need abit more information on them two both, what good and bad things. Sorry if i give you guys wrong questions.

Great information, i didnt thought about weight between 450D and 30D. Mainly i use it for walking about, night shot, at wedding etc...i dnt use it for bird, sport etc so that what information i been looking for

I think i will may go for 450d because i have to get used to learn how to use it before i get XXD?

I have a 30D as my backup and I have seen my friend's 450 (I also have my own 350).

Whilst I acknowledge the fact that the 450 is a lovely camera, I would personally still go for the 30D.

From an ergonimic point of view, I can move easily and deftly between the 5D2, 5D1 and 30D (with similar top LCDs and thumbwheels) and they are similar dimensions.

I find its rendering to useful (for a cropped sensor camera, obviously not as good as the 5Ds) and its frames per second to be excellent.

It also feels as though the 30D is a much tougher body and less of a fiddle.

Battery charge seems to last for ever on the 30D - not sure what it's like on the 450.

Thank you for information, steve. i need put poll up, cos there few mix about both

There one thing, 30d dont come with len so what the best len would i go for walking about and night shot etc?

Just a quick point i the only thing putting you off the 450D is the weight/size add a battery grip which will make the camera feel like a completely different kettle of fish, feels more balanced and better in the hand.

Best lens for the 30D?

How big's your budget?

If you're tight on budget and want quality rather than flexibility, then go for the canon 50mm f/1.8 for something under £100 new. If you can afford more then the 50mm f/1.4 is even better. I would also use 100mm f/2.8 Macro for a bit of extra reach.

When I used the 30D I needed to put the best fast glass on it to try and counter the dullness of the cropped sensor and the relatively high noise with high ISO.

If you need zoom then I guess it depends on what you want it for. I prefer the shorter end of things for walkaround and longer lenses (70 upwards) for portraits and animals.

There are zooms with huge reach (wide angle to telephoto) and these are popular but I have not used them so I can't comment on quality but I imagine they very flexible - one lens for everything?

Hope this helps

Steve

That brill, i would start learning it first before i get some more lens, the problem is 30D that for sale is dont come with len so i might go for 18-55mm IS for now then 50mm f1.8 and hopefully 17-200mm soon?

The image quality from the 450D should be slightly better. It also has more extras.
The built quality from the 30D is way better and it's also a better camera for sports, since it's capable of 5fps.

The 30D is basically a 20D with a larger LCD and a spot meter option.
My first dSLR was the 20D, 5 years ago, and I still think they are great cameras. They are even cheaper and one of the best deals ou there, for those who want a semi-pro body and are in a limited budget. If you think the LCD size is not that important and if you can live without spot metering, you should also consider that option.

I had 30d (been replaced by 40D now) and also used 400d. Well, 30D was fun to use, and 8MP was plenty for A3+ size prints. 5fps is also enough for a beginner (my 1Ds doesn't even go above 4fps). 1/250s sync speed will be nice when you acquire a few flashes, and most importantly it is very convenient and intuitive to operate. 40D does everything just a touch better, and also introduces sensor cleaning (the most important update). I would skip the grip though. It simply makes the camera much heavier.
450d will be a struggle if you have large hands. Also small viewfinder and low fps won't help to take best shots. Menu system and handling are a bit fiddly as well. I can't recommend 450D to be honest.
Lens-wise you could start with Tamron 17-50 and maybe throw in one of the 100mm macro, 85mm f/1.8 or 70-200mm f/4L.

The only real trouble with 20D is weaker shutter rated for 50,000 shots (vs 100,000 for 30d). Considering the age of 20D I would view it as a risky purchase. Also spot metering may come very useful at times.

Thanks guy for information but I'm too late, 30D is sold to someone so better off with 450D or hopefully I find bargin price of 30D. I will keep all information you guys post in my mind.

I see that some question 30D high ISO performance. My 20D should be similar...ISO 3200 doesn't seem useless even without noise reduction...

Good luck with the 450D.

Do it. Having owned a 450D I can say it's not a bad camera but the build quality and general feel of it does go downhill after the honeymoon period and you start to try to get a little more from your shots. For all I have no experience with the 30D, I have the body that replaced it - the 40D. The difference is immense and you will not regret it slightly. Get a 30D.

I have had both 450 and still have 30D. The 450D was good, but I found the 30D definitely better. I haven't had any problems with the quality, the speed of the shooting rate, and the fact it is enthusiast level means there are more direct controls, which I find a big bonus. And that extra quality of the build sways it for me, it has an excellent grip. :)
