If you had to choose between a 30D and a 450D, which would you go for, and why?

Thanks,

Chris.

Chris, they're two different cameras so it totally depends what you shoot.

But they probably cost about the same, used 30d or discounted 450d.
30d, nicely built metal body and a great learning tool, but usual risks of buying secondhand. 450d lightweight, more pixels, warranty and great performance.

Check performance re high iso noise at dpreview and dcresource.
Availability of low shutter count 30d could swing it.

We use 450d for training and it takes great pictures, perhaps Canon's best bargain at the mo.

Do Canon still sell the 450 new? If so, it speaks a lot for it as it is now three generations behind.

450D is a nice camera. A mate of mine has had his from new and loves it. Some cracking shots from it too!

I can only say on the 350D vs 40D as that was the change I made, the 40D is MUCH nicer to handle, in every respect it feels more of a proper camera. Plus the ISO performance is much better IMO. I'd always buy used vs new, you get much better value for money.

If it breaks then drop it and claim on your home insurance.*

*if you can sleep at night after doing such a terrible thing.

Thanks guys.

I'd like to try and stretch the budget to a 40d, I just don't think it will be possible.

I think a 30d will be a good compromise.

If your home insurance covers accidental damage on digital/video cameras ;)

I used a 30D for 4 years till this March. It was a solid performer - I'd choose it over the 450D as long as weight isn't an issue.

What points would make you choose it over the 450D? Also, what would one expect to have to pay for a good 2nd hand 40D?

I'd go the 30D simply because the 450D is too small for me. I have too many fingers waggling around underneath it doing nothing.

40D's seem to go for somewhere between 360 and 440 quid. Their prices are dropping quite quickly though.

If there are others at £230 or a bit more in xlnt cond it's got to be the way to go, a 450d will cost at least £360 refurbished from digigood or maybe a bit more BNIB.

I honestly think it boils down to the handling and weight. Both cameras will give you excellent pictures as quite frankly they have a Canon logo on them! The 30D is solid, weighty and fits in larger hands easily. The smaller 450D is easier to pop in your rucksack to take on holiday and carry around all day. For me this is the most important factor as the 30D was getting left at home more and more.

Any others on here with 450D with remarks on what they think of the camera in terms of picture quality etc?

I have a 450D & love it - I bought it because it's small & lightweight.

It's my first DSLR & I've only had it 4 months so I can't give you a comparison to others but considering it is an 'entry level' camera I am well satisfied.
