300mm or 70-200 at Mach Loop?

Hi all - I'm going to Mach Loop for the 1st time. Can anyone tell me if it's worth hauling my 300 2.8 up there, or will I be alright with a much lighter 70-200 2.8 (I'll have 1.4x extender too). How far away (ish) are the planes at Cad East or West?

for 'the' cad west shot 300mm on crop is ideal, 280 is ok.

Most of the full frame boys use 400mm

300 2.8 all the way, it is the tool of choice all over the loop.

google "fox2 co uk" for locations advice and loads of pics.
 
cad east and cad west you can get away with your 70-200 with the 1x4x converter but everywhere else your 300mm is a far better bet along with the F2.8 which really helps when it clouds in (all the time)

I would also suggest going up cad west as the shots are far more dynamic than the east uless you have a 600mm plus lens for the head ons but cad east gets far too many bottom shots whereas the west side gives top sides

Most people using the 1D series are using the 300 2.8, so you might as well follow the crowd :D Its worth lugging up.
 
300mm but to clarify what allan has already said, dont take any gear with you that you dont need, wrap up warm because the cads have there own mini climate regardless of the rest of the country and wear good footwear, walkin pole can come in handy but not essential.

Hope there is for you but only problem with friday is activity can sometimes dwindle in the afternoon due to weekend... good luck
 
some of my busiest times have been late on fridays, 4pm ish in march. If one Hawk comes lateish, don't be suprised to see a fair few more, I think Cheesy knocks off early and the kids bring the toys to play :clap::nuts:

no, take the 70-200 as well in case a herc comes along. you'll have time to change lenses.:thumbs:
 
I tend to disagree with Pecrow on that one. As many do, move up the hill a bit. I have been there when two hercs came through, as the last herc came level with us there was a shout that they were being followed by two Harriers so there would be no time to change back to the 300. OK you will still get the shot of the Harriers, but much better one with the 300. It has happened more than once getting bounced by other A/C.

so take both bodies, 300 on 1d4 70-200 on 1d3

btw I managed for a long time on 200mm ff and now use 200mm on a 1d so if you have a bad back or anything then you can cope with lighter lenses

I agree with David, the few times I've been up Cad West 200mm has been enough for me on full frame :thumbs:
