What are the fundamental differences between both versions (I hope I got the letters right) apart from age, please? Anyone experienced both and care to comment. Are they as sharp or as fast as eachother? Main purpose will be for motorsport and will occasionally use a T/C.

If the 80-200 AF-D v 70-200 VR AF-S are anything to go by then there will be quite a noticeable difference in focus speed.

The older one is slower to focus, and will not focus as close as the newer AF-S, optically the results are similar.

Have a look at Thoms Reviews, he covers both pretty well

I have the old one and you need a meaty body to focus it.

I use mine with a F5 and focus is very fast. A weaker body will struggle to move the elements quickly though

Thankfully with a D300 I'd expect it to work at its best and on a par with the FX bodies above it. How do you find the image results and do you happen to shoot motor-sport?

i have just got the af ed and i,m very happy with it...i use it with the d300 and it is pretty quick and razor sharp
