Folks,

I'm thinking of swapping my Canon 300 f4 IS for a Sigma 120-300 f2.8.

Why.. flexibility of zoom over prime and better low light ability.

Cons - weight of Sigma, prime is also very sharp.

Has anyone done the same?, anyone got any views?

Have I bumped my head in the night to even think of doing it?.

Cheers for any views or comments

Rob

The Sigma 120-300 is really very very nice.

However my brother in law went from the 300mm f/4 to the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 (the prime) and really regretted it.

How often do you use IS? If you are a handholding sort of person, due to the size and weight of the Sigma 120-300 its a big commitment to own - its not a lens you have casually in your bag.

I actually went FROM a Sigma 120-300 to a 300mm f/4 and didn't regret it.

The 120-300 is a super lens though, incredible performer.

I wouldnt go that way around.. I recommend anyone to get a siggy 120-300 but not if you have a better lens... I think you will be dissapointed with colours and bokah

ADDYONBIT puddleduck has it spot on actually :)

Folks,

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Struggling with this one as 300 f4 is great, light weight and sharp and has IS, but lacks flexibility of the zoom.
The weight has always been the thing that put me off, even before I got the 300 f4 alongside the apparently poor Sigma QC standards.
I had a sigma 500 for a while and this was fine on a monopod and was about same weight.

Maybe a weeks hire will sell me or put me off.

Thanks again

Rob
