I might have the option of buying new toy as i got an unexpected £300 today which puts a new lens in the 'possible' pile :)

I have been dreaming for many months now of being able to destroy my horrendously awful Sigma 70-300 and replace it  There are two options: 300 f4 IS L or 400 f5.6 L. But which would be best?

I use a 300D, and would like to take more water sports pics if i could.

I can't decide though! So it's up to you lot to give me reasons for and against each one.

Thanks!

f/5.6 is quite high, if your set on either of those two then the 300 f/4 IS is probably going to be better, it also has the advantage of IS.

You could also concider the Canon 70-200 f/4 and f/2.8. The f/4 without IS is about £300.

I personally prefer zoom lenses as apposed to fixed, just gives you more variation.

200 is way too short, and i want a prime :)

300mm f4 then use a 1.4 converter and you have a 420mm f5.6. Depends what you want to shoot.
The 300mm F4 is a real gem.

Matt,

I've got (and use) both these lenses....what are subjects likely to be ?

At the risk of sounding like a pimp: If you're thinking of plonking down £800+ on a lens but you're not sure which one is right for you, you could try hiring one (or even both) for a few days to try it/them out. It wouldn't be horrendously expensive and you might sleep easier at night knowing that you'd made the right choice.

It would be over £100... and the lenses can be picked up for £600 :) If i don't like the lens i can sell, it's not as though it's going to lose much money is it!

Canon_Bob... subject is likely to be surf/kite surfing/maybe motorsport.

I'm not an expert in any of those but I would imagine that the extra length of the 400 would be a benefit. The IS on the 300 is not too big a consideration (although it can be used).

The IQ (especially sharpness) of the 400 will beat the 300 +1.4T/C hands down.

Both are nice lenses though.

Matt, I have answered this thread on Fredmiranda but basically get the 300 f/4 L IS. What a great lens.

You can add a 1.4x tele afterwards if you still need the reach and only suffer minimal drop in quality.
