I was mucking about the other day snapping the kids and dogs but I only had a 50mm f1.8 with me. I was after a bit more reach but had a 2X TC to hand so stuck it between the 50mm f1.8 and Canon 1D mk III and after a quick 'chimp' at the results I think I'll try it again.

So, I was just wondering if anybody has / does use a teleconverter with a 50mm f1.8 lens and if so why and what for ?

Teleconverters are designed and optimised for use with telephoto lenses. Canon's own telecons will only fit on longer lenses. I've not found a reason to want to try them on shorter lenses personally buyt I wou'dn't be expecting great results if I did!

Cheers Phil, I appreciate it's an unconventional combo - that was why I was wondering if anybody had tried it.

I realise what they're designed for. I only use them on longer lenses myself and even then I do so when I'm resigned to.

The only reason I asked about the 50 1.8 with 2X was that the results (remember I'm only talking family fun pics here) seemed surprisingly good at 100mm even with the TC stopping the initial f1.8 down.

Off the top of my head my fastest 100mm just now is f4.5 on the Canon 100-400.

I might see how the two compare.

Phil, if my maths is correct (and at 07:30 on a Saturday, it may well not be!), the combo you used is effectively a 100mm f/4. As an occasional extra, well worth it but my choice is for a separate 105mm f/2.8 - mainly because mine's a macro and has VR! Mine's not a light option though...

Since your combo works and is light (not to mention what you have), why not!

Nothing wrong with a bit of time etc, at 2x you have an effective 3.6 but ofcourse it would be an F4 at 100mm which is good for portraits if you're messing about. TC's will add some aberration in light areas though (unless it's a Canon EX which will slightly help)
At 100mm you'll have a good outdoor lens for taking photos of the kids and family etc :)

Thanks for the replies folks.

I'll have a proper play later and see how it stacks up.

You know what, if it works then why not! Good on you for trying something different, I'd be interested in seeing some results.

Canon 100mm f/2 is an excellent and very affordable lens.

50mm is neither great, nor it will work with canon TC. It will work with 3rd party ones, but that would be a very bad idea to do so.

I don't have one of those at the moment though

I tend to shoot landscapes and wildlife so my lenses reflect that.

A high end 50 or 85 would be OTT for what I do but the 50 1.8 is such a cheap little lens and is capable of pleasing results.
