Due to this being a pretty rare lens im finding it hard to find information on what teleconverters are compatible. Am i stuck with only the nikon AF-S range if i want to retain AF? Will these even work? Body is a D80.

Cheers

IIRC it's the 80-200 AF D is the one with Nikon TC problems, the 80-200 AF-S is OK with Nikon's latest TC's, Sigma/Kenko TC are OK with both, that's all I can remember from researching when I was looking into getting a Nikon 1.7 for my 80-200 AF D, I think K. Rockwell has a chart on his ramblings somewhere with what works with what which may help you more :)

As above....for AF-D use the KEnko offerings, for AF-S you can use the Nikon TC's.

To be honest, having put my 1.7x TC onto my 70-200VR the output is a bit blurgh. The 2x is going to be hideous... 2x usually are!

I'm slightly confused, you contradicted his post :p are you saying only the nikon tc-20e af-s will autofocus with af-s lens? Price difference between the nikon and kenko is huge. £250 vs £100 respectively.

I've seen good results from the 2x and 80-200 af-s.

I guess it depends on your definition of "good results". I could show you a photo at 640x480 and you'd be none the wiser really...

2x TC is really only any good on a really bright sunny day and if your output is for either something very small or something very poorly reproduced (eg newspaper print)
