2x converter hunting problem

My 2x converter on a 600mm lens on a 1ds mk3 will not lock on focus, it just hunts, put it on a 1ds mk2 and its fine.Iv'e installed the latest firmware and eliminated the 600 lens from the investigation so we are down to the body.Will this be a 'recall' job or is there anything i can sort out, all suggestions welcome, cheers andy

What focus point are you using. I know the 1Dslll on some units have problems with non central focus points.

If the Mkll is OK I would start to suspect the camera. Get in touch with Canon and get it checked out. via the recal. Probably worth it anyway just to be on the safe side

A bit more info would help to build up the picture.....

As John (Chappers) says above...what focus point/s are you using?
Is the hunting extreme or just twitching around the true focus distance?
Does 1 Shot AF give different performance to AI Servo?
Is it better with IS turned off?
Are you using a drop-in CPL on the 600/4?
Confirm that your "latest" firmware is 1.1.4
Is the problem in low contrast situations or will it not AF on to a telegraph pole against blue sky?

yep,the hunting is extreme, you can only get centre focus point with this lens anyway, IS doesnt make a difference,brightly lit.....no difference, contrast... no diff...

oh, i do have a drop in filter in it and it has firmware 1.1.4 an ai servo and 1 shot do the same
 
Sounds like it could be the drop in filter then?

The drop in polariser works fine with the 300mm and 2XTC. I must admit I haven't tried it yet with the 500mm and 2XTC.

Well as others have said Andy, there is a recall on the 1DMk3 and 1DSMK3 at the moment for focus issues. Could be down to that?
 
which will be fine.......but what if you bought it off a fleabay shop as i did....don't they want proof it was bought from WE?, or such like?

Doesn't matter if you got it from the man in the moon, get the form filled in and get it checked!

It's deffo worth it.
 
Hmmm. That could be a problem. As I understand it Canon and Nikon et al have an obligation to honour the warranty regardless of where in the world you bought the body. What they'll tend to do though is insist you return it for warranty work in the country of origin... at your expense of course. Maximum hassle for being naughty and not playing by their rules. ;)

I have a heard of Canon doing warranty work on imported bodies though sometimes, so I'd give it a go at least. there's a contact number somewhere for these recalls.

This isn't actually a warranty job though, it's a general product recall so you may well be OK.
 
The drop-in, assuming it's the polariser, is putting the combination out to f/11 minimum and f/16 at worst.

Once you get beyond a specified limit then you enter "the twilight zone". Your 500/4 might work and my 600/4 won't, your 50D might do it, mine won't....into the wooley area of tolerances and is there an R in the month stuff.
