Hi, I've got a Dell XPS 17 (2 months old - XPS L702x) and looking to add a 2nd internal drive (2TB).

My question in no particular order, any suggestions on where to get the drive, do I need anything else to fit it (in my old HP there was an adaptor or something that the drive plugged into, what spec/type drive do I need..... etc etc?

I'm OK with installing RAM/drives etc, just want to make sure I get everything that is needed and obviously the correct type.

Thanks,

Mark

Take the cover off and have a look to see if there is a caddy in situ, if not you'll need to get one.
Hard drive......you'll just need to scan the net for the best price on the drive you want.

Aria are fairly keen with their prices

i use these for all my parts

always been very good and price wise, seem to be in and around the best, if your not sure give them a call or drop an email.

itll definately be a 2.5" drive, which i think is currently limited to 1TB.

if your model is one with a dedicated 2nd hard drive bay then it should have the necessary adapter already screwed in - (see pic here).

if it does not have a 2nd hard drive bay then i think you can get a caddy to replace the optical drive. but again itll need to be a 2.5" drive.

Mark, I also have a Dell XPS L702x, which I have fitted a second 1TB drive into the extra slot.
The image that neil links to is correct.
The job is very easy.
Just remove the bottom cover, remove the fitting bracket, fit that to your drive & slot back into position.
The holding screws are very small & can be a little difficult to handle.
Just fit the outer cover & power up the machine.
Then you have to go into control panel, system & security, admin tools, computer management, storage, disk management & set the new drive to active.
Simple.
As for a supplier, I prefer SCAN
They have a today special 1TB Western Digital WD10TPVT Scorpio Blue, 2.5" @ £83.99
but this price will increase within 24hrs

you can also replace the cd drive with another hard disc - this what ive done in mine :)

If you're feeling flush, replacing the system disk with an SSD makes the XPS machines fly. I used a Corsair Performance Pro 256G and it was a noticeable improvement.

yup def second that , if only i could afford to do that with a 256g one for my photos it would be soooo fast !

I put a 64gig SSD as the boot drive & 1TB drive as the data storage.
Makes a massive difference with the loading times.
Any work in CS5, Lightroom etc is almost instant.
Also added a few extra gig of RAM to make things move along that little bit smoother :)
If I need any more space, I can use the e-sata port with an external drive.

The price of SSD's is very low at the moment.
You can get a Crucial M4 128GB drive for less than £100

Currently on special this week at Overclockers £90. I paid £105 just two weeks ago. Prices seem to be dropping fast.
