It's a shame no-one has made some kind of dip test like a litmus paper to test whether developer is still ok to use. Finding out after it has completely blanked a roll is too late :(

Even with very old, expired developer, I would expect to see at least a faint image of the edge markings.

Steve.

If that's the case, what could be the problem? Everything else seems to be fine and I don't want to keep wasting film and chemicals!

I have a colour roll needs sending away that was shot at the same time as the last B&W roll.

Still possible to load it backwards..in a removable back.

Exactly right Trevor and if you are left handed you will wind it backwards ( without education ).

I showed an assistant how to load a film back once. They said they were confident and I trusted her. The negatives were clear, my chemistry was spot on. I didn't understand what had gone wrong. I asked her to show me..... The penny dropped. That was a painful moment when I realised I had lost a days work.

You snip off a piece of the leader and drop it in the developer to see if it turns black.

The only reason I know of to get blank film with no edge markings is putting the fix in first.

I've had completely blank films from developer that has only just expired.

This discussion seems to be going round in circles now.

But if the developer had gone off, then surely that is the same as putting the fix in first?

It would seem so, a simple list of what to expect with common faults would be handy maybe as a sticky e.g. a blank film dev but with edge markings would mean....no images from camera.

Something like this?

Quick update. Thanks for all the help and advices. Just developed a roll with brand new developer and everything looks fine. It is hanging up to dry. So to conclude, my Developer had gone off!

Good to hear Gaz, looking forward to seeing some results.
