Hi All,
New to the forum and just getting back into photography with my Canon 400D.
I have a 18-55 kit lens but I have acquired both a 28-80 and a 35-105.
As the latter two overlap my question is, is there any advantage to keeping the 28-80 as between the other two I have the range covered.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Perhaps the above quote may answer your question...I do appreciate your reply...thanks for not actually answering the question asked.

Anyone got a less patronising answer??

Depending on budget of course, if you keep the 18-55 and sell the other 2, you could then get a 24-105 f4.0 L for around £600-700 or the 28-135 f3.5-5.6 at about half the price. I'm waiting for a 24-105 to arrive so I cant comment on IQ directly but by all accounts it's a great lens.

Interesting, thanks, I may actually eventually sell both and put towards another lens..keeping the 18-55
All lenses came to me either with the camera or as gifts.
My photography is quite general at the moment..still experimenting .
Appreciate the advice, thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the forum

why oh why would you want to buy such pointless lenses?! I would get rid of the whole lot and get something more sensible like tamron 17-50 + canon 70-200mm.

Not sure that is the best advice! Both the lenses daugirdas has recommended are very good lenses, but they may not be suitable to you. The thing to remember about this forum is there are a lot of people who have invested a lot of money on camera kit, therefore what they have bought is sometimes recommended as being the be all and end all. Just remember there are often other alternatives out there!

The same goes to the lenses modchild has recommended. They are good lenses, but they would be shocking to use for certain types of photography (e.g. architectural, or nightclub photography) on your 400D.

If you are looking to get back into photography stick to one lens and work out where you want to go from there. Try and stray away from Auto and use Av, Tv, and M. Once you get used to your new kit you will be able to work out where it is letting you down and how you can add new kit to improve your photography.

Hi Steve, and welcome to TP!

The answer to your question is NO, there is no point in keeping the 28-80mm apart from the fact that you might not find anybody who wants it. The 35-105mm is a reasonably competent lens and should give acceptable results on a 10mp camera. Colours are good contrast is okay. It does however suffer with flair so it's best to use a lens hood. There were two models of this lens AFD and HSM. The early model was very noisy and slow to focus, but the HSM was an improvement.

Good luck.

 brilliant..
Thanks for all the advice from all much appreciated.
Dave, I think your advice is very sensible. I'm going to learn to take photographs before worrying about lenses and go from there and I think this forum is going to be a great help..

Depends which version of these lenses they are,if they are the plastic mount versions well they are not really worth keeping,if the metal mount versions having had both in the digital and film eras they are very good quality lenses and would try them out and see what you think of the results then get rid of which one of the 2 you feel is of least use

I was only trying to help regarding the reach that the OP was asking about, as Steve didn't mention types of photography he's wanting to take.
