Hi, threre is a Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 II for sale in the classifieds, i have a 600d with the 18-55 kit lens, i also have a 50mm, and a 55-250, i,m thinking of buying the 28-105, anyuone got any thoughts on them, dont no if its need or greed, or am i better of waiting till i can afford something a bit better,
HELP,

Well, it's not expensive, it'll do a reasonable job at f/8 and you'll probably get most of your money back if you sell it later to get something a bit more exotic.

Do you need it ?.....you're best placed to make that judgement.

There are several versions of the 28-105, I would bet none of them are as good as your 18-55 especially if its the IS version.

I have one that I used for a while when I first got into digital SLR's, it was OK ish from about 40mm upwards. Wide open at 28mm it was pretty grotty even on a crop body. By 5.6 -8.0 it was Ok especially at the longer end. Not sure if it was just my copy but I had already returned one as being too soft and the second one was not much better.

Also 28-105 is a bit of an odd length for crop body (45-168 eq) unless you crave that kind of coverage.

Well i was kinda thinking i could use it as a half decent " walkabout/everyday " lens, kind of cover most situations, thanx for the quick reply,s lads. . . . b****r, one for and one against. . . . . . pass me a cider. . .

I would agree, totally an "in between" focal length for a crop, and not as good as your 18-55 IS from an IQ perspective.

Remember, it's effectively just an old kit lens as well.

I would also add, the one currently in the classifieds is also overpriced. The last one on here was up for £65.

I used to own one a few years ago. There are a few versions. You need to get the made in Japan one. It was the best of the bunch. Quite liked mine, used it on a 40D.
Nothing to do with me but there is one on the bay right now. Listing 141011013818

At least it'll show you which model to look out for.

As a kit lens replacement on a crop body I wouldn't bother I've never understood how people use a 24-105mm as a walkabout on crop so a 28mm wide end would be even less useful for me.

I have one I use on a 7d and 1dmkiii, it suits the latter a little better. As a cheap walkabout for a 1.3x, its ok, compact, good image quality, fast quiet AF. It'll do until I can shell out £500 for the 24-105. Check carefully which version, there a good buyers guide on eBay.

Thanx for the advise everybody, you made my mind up ,
Dave
