Hi I have a 450d and currently only the pop up flash. I am looking for a flash to enable better indoor and night shots and really like the look of the 270ex as it is compact. The cost however is about the same as the 430ex which seems to be over spec for current needs but at least the option is there if I need it. It does however look a lot larger and imposing than the 270ex. Any views on the best way to go appreciated.

Would definitely go for the 430 for the features. The swivel will definitely help in indoor lighting for bouncing flash. Manual settings will also help in the future if you wanna learn lighting. And..bulky will make you look more 'professional' ;p

You will need "Bounce" so go for the 430EX even better is the 580EX which can control other flashes.

or even better would be 580ex ii if you are willing to pay that amount!

or for the cost of the 430 you could get a sigma 550DG Super which is pretty similar spec wise to a 580.

270 does bounce, played with a 270 and a 430 I would get 430, or funds allowing a 580. the 270 doesn't have manual control which is what I don't like - does sit sweetly on a g10 though

didn't think sigma did a 550DG, they did a 500DG and 500 DG Super, which have been replaced with a 530DG and 530 DG super.

I've recently just purchased a nissin Di622 from ebay - my first off-camera flash, seem to work well, can be trigger using on camera flash, has bounce and swivel and manual controls - cost £75 or so from HK.

also just bought an additional flash - a Sigma 500 DG super from ebay to, and a set of wireless triggers from dealextreme - just awaiting these to arrive.

Just need to learn what to do with it all now :)
