So what prime to go with a 50mm f1.8g?

The 28mm f1.8g or 24mm f1.8g.

They both get very good reviews.

How much difference does the 4mm make?

Is it better to go with a 28mm if people are included in shots?

I do not shoot a lot of wide shots, but for a wedding in January I need something wider than the 50mm. Last wedding I used a 35/85 and have decided I do need to go wider than 35.

So what would be your choice to go with the 50 (and maybe an 85).

16-35 f4

I found the 28mm to be a very nice lens, but it wasn't wide enough for me, given I wanted a 35mm lens too.

A 28/50/85 is a very nice lens set as is 24/50/85 (for me the 50 is no good, not a length I use much). 4mm doesn't sound much but if you consider the angle of view (on FX) ... the 28mm is 75deg and the 24 is 84deg so a 9 deg difference. I'd prefer the 24mm tbh ... and the difference in terms of photographing people would only be relevant if you were very close to them, for groups you would have a wider field of view and distortion wouldn't be an issue at the distance you'd be at. If you wanted close up candids the 28 would be better, but a 35 would be better still for me.

Didn't you have a 24-70/85? If you still have it stick it on 24mm and try it then 28mm and try it, see which feels best for you.

I have the 24-120 and my wife uses the 24-70. I am still debating trying the 24-70 again as was previously struggling to hold steady due to on going shoulder injury.

I was looking at a prime set up for January and I like the 50 so need something wider!

I struggled somewhat with the 35mm, I just wasn't comfortable using it. But that might be because I was trying to shoot all and everything with it rather than swapping to the 85!

Focal length is such a personal thing it's difficult to recommend something for another person.

Personally I don't really get on with 35mm, preferring 28mm for the wider view but then 28mm is getting quite wide for general shooting at a wedding due to a perspective distortion.

If you have the ability to try using a zoom then there's your answer.

I find using primes much more enjoyable. I've recently sold my 24-70 and 70-200 and now just use primes. They can be lighter and I hear you about shoulder probs. Having a lighter bag when hiking is good but not the main reason.

The 50 is definitely my go to focal length, I just need to forget the 35 as I have tried it a number of times.

I will try the zooms as 24 and 28 too see what works best.

I used the 28 and 50mm 1.8g a lot at weddings, the 28 was probably my most used lens. Wide enough for most occasions but not so wide you need to be careful of people near the corners looking odd. I did tend to crop in a bit for closer to 35mm perspective so tried the 35 instead but missed the extra width of the 28. Ideal solution if you didn't mind the weight - sigma 24-35 f2.

Dont fancy anything too heavy so 24-35 is out. I like the sound of the 28 and 50 I think. Did you find yourself wanting anything longer?

For weddings I use a 20-35 2.8 a 50mm 1.8 and an 80-200 2.8 if needed in church
